September 30, 2007 at 19:32 #117300For some reason it has never allowed me into chat since the switch to the new site.
Bit late now…
September 30, 2007 at 19:38 #117302Chat appears to be just a big grey square – a bit like me.
September 30, 2007 at 21:49 #117312Quiz was a great success. Must do it again some time.

I got this for the first couple of weeks of the new boards – some incidents I think Corm can suggest fixes for, but most, like mine, required a newer version of Java to be loaded.

September 30, 2007 at 22:33 #117315Cheers GC – fun had by all!
September 30, 2007 at 22:41 #117317My quiz next Sunday, 8.30. Be there, or be sane.
September 30, 2007 at 23:16 #117320Thanks to everyone who dropped by this evening, either to play or to watch. There were about 20 people in the chatroom for the rump of the quiz, which hasn’t happened too often since the site was revamped.
As I mentioned the other day, it was as much the banter as the quiz itself that made the evening, even if a lot of it was Grasshopper berating my rules on spelling, my inclusion of Flat questions, depriving him of a fag break, etc. etc.!
This was the closest quiz I’ve done and also the one with the widest spread of points-scorers. Happy Jack was taken to the last question by Zoz but maintained his winning streak – just – in a head-bob. Better luck next time, Zoz, though I can’t honour your request for a fillies’ and mares’ allowance, I’m afraid!

A big thank you also to Alan (apracing) for providing some of the Cheltenham questions. Friggo got your "first Cheltenham race legally shown in UK betting shops" in a nanosecond, which was dead impressive.
For those of you who couldn’t make it and want to try your luck at your own leisure, here are the questions. Only two, I think, evaded answering completely. Why 38 questions? That was as many as I could fit into exactly two hours (excluding the comfort break partway through)….
[b:1f4ijix1]GENERAL FLAT RACING[/b:1f4ijix1]
1) Who trained the mare Madame Jones to score 12 times on the Flat during 2001, 11 of them handicaps?
2) FILL THE BLANK IN THIS FINISHING ORDER; (1) Teofilo, (2) Holy Roman Emperor, (3) …………….. (4) Haatef (Newmarket, 14th October 2006).
3) The Hilary Needler Trophy, a Listed sprint for fillies, is an early season highlight at which Flat venue?
4) Which current Flat jockey is the subject of this excerpt taken from an interview in the Independent in June 2007; “[he] learned the ropes in show jumping before leaving for Yorkshire 19 years ago, and serving his apprenticeship with ‘Squeak’ Fairhurst. ‘I spent a couple of months riding over jumps, and had one winner from about 30 rides,’ he recalled. ‘But then I broke two bones in my neck in a hurdle race at Newcastle, and I thought: ‘That’ll do!’ And I went on a diet’.
5) In which 3 years in the 1980s did Pat Eddery ride consecutive winners of the Prix de L’Arc de Triomphe? Bonus point for each horse named.
[b:1f4ijix1]CHELTENHAM[/b:1f4ijix1]
6) Viking Flagship won the Queen Mother Champion Chase in 1994 and 1995 under different riders – name them.
7) What is the longest distance over which any race is run at Cheltenham?
8 ) I need a race and a year – which Cheltenham race was the first race legally shown live in UK betting shops?
9) FILL THE BLANK IN THIS 2007 FESTIVAL FINSHING ORDER: (1) Heads on the Ground, (2) ……………., (3) Le Duc, (4) Spotthedifference.
10) What specifically was unusual about the winner of the 1996 Foxhunters’ Chase?
11) Last year’s Triumph Hurdle winner Katchit met with defeat only once during his juvenile hurdle season. Which horse beat him, and at what course did they do it?
12) Tied Cottage’s subsequent disqualification for testing positive for a banned substance promoted Master Smudge to winner of the 1980 Cheltenham Gold Cup. Who trained him?
13) Only three times in the last 20 years has the Top Jockey at the Cheltenham Festival ridden as many as five winners. Tony McCoy achieved the feat in 1998 – who are the other two jockeys to have managed the feat?

October 1, 2007 at 00:27 #117322I know all them answers now GC, wish I was sober for the quiz
Seriously, can I say thank you very much for an entertaining night, it was great being there and great to see the world record for ‘expletives in an hour’ broken by Grasshopper
Can’t wait for the next one, and for the banter….. but until next time GC, and everyone who was there, thanks for a great night.

October 1, 2007 at 01:00 #117323Looking at the questions I’m glad I wasn’t there to embarass myself
The rest of the evening sounded fun though!October 1, 2007 at 07:59 #117341Great quiz GC – perfect level of questions on the whole. Many thanks.
Thanks also to all who turned out, hopefully everyone enjoyed it.
October 1, 2007 at 11:58 #117385many thanks everyone for a truly chucklesome event, although I hadn’t realised how little I knew until now…..mo
October 1, 2007 at 16:49 #117417well done gc great fun, even though it highlighted my thickness at horse racing. would love to know who told grasshopper the laytown and dundalk answer, must have had his missus sitting in with him.
October 1, 2007 at 19:52 #117445……..and great to see the world record for ‘expletives in an hour’ broken by Grasshopper
I take humbrage at that statement, MikkyMo. I didn’t even come anywhere near my Personal Best.
Besides, any liberal use of profanity yesterday evening, can be laid squarely at the door of Mr Graysons “I am on the turn and now only bet in sand-dancing 5f handicaps” Column. I think we all know that the abuse was warranted.
PS. Where’s my eight-grand??

Grass, Grass, Grass… if only you’d have typed your answers as error-free as the above last night, then you would have accummulated enough points to have overhauled both Happy Jack and Zoz, and thereby rendered the whole argument of whether I’m "on the turn" (I’m not) utterly academic.
Amazing what you can do when your typing hand is suitably un-beschlonged.

October 2, 2007 at 08:41 #117521Great Stuff
GH, Your money is currently with the quiz organiser, who will gladly release it for you once you have completed the following test. You must fill in the blanks to the following statement;
"The Epsom _ _ _ _ _ is one of the most prestigious flat throrughbred horse races in the world. History books show that this 1m4f race was first run in 1780, and was won by _ _ _ _ _ _, owned by Sir Charles Bunbury. The most successful jockey is _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ who won the race 9 times, while the largest ever winning margin was in 1981, when _ _ _ _ _ _ _ won by 10 lengths. It is rumoured, that the winner of the 1981 _ _ _ _ _ was kidnapped by Grasshopper as a form of protest, because of his dislike for the race. Grasshopper is of the opinion that if the race was to have 8 flights of _ _ _ _ _ _ _ on it’s way round then he would have no problem with the race whatsoever. Grasshopper also believes there should be a water jump at _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ Corner to make the race more exciting".
