Quito de la roque has made a serious step in right direction in his road to the Cheltenham gold cup I thought it was a really good run showed he’s an out an out stayer watch out long run.
November 5, 2011 at 22:54 #376291Certainly the best chance Ireland has of winning it.
Does he have the pace for a good ground Gold Cup?Is a good enough jumper?
Value Is EverythingNovember 5, 2011 at 23:02 #376296I think he is quick enough. He was a lot sharper after a couple of runs last year and I’m hoping he’ll be less sluggish next time out. He looked plenty fast enough at Aintree and Punchestown. Interestingly, those runs were on good ground. Food for thought.
Is he a good enough jumper? The jury is out. He’s cable of making a blunder, but when he gets them right he really wings them with ease. He always seems to get from one side to the other though!

I think Rubi Light looks promising after today’s race. His run in the Ryanair for a 6yo was very encouraging to be only beaten 3 lengths after making a bad mistake 3 out. He has never been beyond 2m5 but he shapes like he could run over further and I reckon he could give some of the more illustrious names a right rattle at Haydock.
November 5, 2011 at 23:36 #376312Personally I can’t see him jumping around Cheltenham. Seeing as he has around 20 pounds to make up on Long Run, he is going to have to be one major improver to even get competitive.
Not for me I’m afraid.November 5, 2011 at 23:38 #376313Good point IC,
If Rubi Light stays, at the moment I’d say less likely to stay than to stay. He is one I like. How bad is the injury that prevented him running today?
Value Is EverythingNovember 5, 2011 at 23:46 #376315It was only a minor infection that prevented him from running today. If the race was in another two or three days time he probably would have taken his chance.
He’ll have to prove his stamina but at least he proved at Cheltenham that he can go on better ground. I could definitely see him lasting 3 miles but 3m2 around Cheltenham is another matter entirely.
November 5, 2011 at 23:47 #376317I can’t see that he has that much to make up with Long Run. If that is the case there isn’t much hope for the rest of the second season chasers either and they might as well hand Long Run the Gold Cup now. Personally I think 3m2f around Cheltenham will be ideal for him. Today’s race will have done him the world of good. Afraid I’m still a non believer when it comes to Long Run!
November 6, 2011 at 00:13 #376321I understand where you are coming from thehorsesmouth, as I too still need some convincing that Long Run is really as good as the reputation (hopefully he can live up to it).
I guess beating Sizing Europe as he did today would probably equate to around 162 as a British handicap rating for Quito de la Roque (happy to be corrected by those who know better).
Long Run rated 179 (I think) after the Gold Cup.
When you add in that todays winner now actually has more chasing experience than Long Run, I doubt that his improvement will anywhere near make him competitive at Cheltenham.
I also have some reservations about the jockey situation with Long Run, as a more experienced pilot may make a difference / reduce any advantage. That said, the young man has done little wrong on him so far.November 6, 2011 at 00:15 #376322No chance IMO.
Just got up to beat two non-stayers. The bare form is nowhere near good enough. Loads of others I’d have ahead of him at this stage. Doesn’t look near quick enough either.
November 6, 2011 at 00:23 #376328Fair points Coggy. I would disagree though in that I believe Long Run is far more the finished article than Quito De La Roque, who is as raw as they come.
Onthesteal, I would say he’ll improve at least a stone from that run. Would you have many of last year’s novices ahead of him for the Gold Cup?
November 6, 2011 at 00:29 #376329Wasn’t Long Run getting beaten off a mark of 158 in the Paddy Power only 12 months ago?
The Gold Cup last year sort of fell into his lap. There’s no way the Nicholls pair are anywhere near what they were at their peak and Imperial Commander went wrong. He’s far from unbeatable. I still cannot get the image of Weapons Amnesty simply leaving him for dead out of my mind.
I’m definitely on the lookout for a horse to take him on with but I didn’t see enough today from Quito De La Roque to convince me that he’s the one. Interesting to see whether he improves in the Lexus.
November 6, 2011 at 13:14 #376414How is Pandorama?
At the moment, my Irish chasers for my totetentofollow are:
Quito De La Roque, Noble Prince and Big Zeb in 4 lists.
Rubi Light, Sizing Europe 3.
Pandorama 2.
Joncol 1.Wouldn’t be surprised to see Wishful Thinking go over for the Lexus.
Value Is EverythingNovember 6, 2011 at 23:21 #376526very gutsy performance but can’t see winning the gold cup, maybe even not a place. long run ftw again.
November 6, 2011 at 23:56 #376537The heart and stamina showed to win that mean a lot. Think he is a cracking EW punt. Who else will take him on except Long Run?
November 7, 2011 at 00:04 #376541I’d back a more settled Sizing Europe to reverse that result on the likely better ground at Cheltenham, should he manage to line up.
He pulled like mad much of the trip at Down Royal in that desperate ground and still only just got beat.
