:o thanks men,all info well recieved, but i would like the to attend the races on a regular basis{time permitting}the x- changes probably the future in punting does seem like an office job.now weighing up the field in the paddock how hard is that and where can i find more on that ,read some stuff by an american guy walking short, ears pricked etc i thought i’d cracked it till i got to course only for the one i,d earmarked for having all the qualities to pull the float to romp home unchallenged. a litttle knowledge is a dangerous thing.
September 23, 2002 at 15:29 #100928ho hum rm,
that outside draw won’t have helped. Looked like a sound bet at the price though.
September 23, 2002 at 15:38 #100931And Roses Of Spring’s good effort at Goodwood was clearly not a one-off!
It was all over for Safranine quite early, wasn’t it. A discreet line will now be drawn through her name in my little notbook…
OK – Smart Predator and Absent Friends for the forecast at Beverley tomorrow!!!
September 25, 2002 at 18:52 #100936hope i get sum winners for 2morrow
September 25, 2002 at 18:59 #100939Sorry to hear that Belly. But keep your focus long term overall.. so far you have done well.
I find losses are times to evaluate whats going on, what went wrong today (if anything) ? why did you make the decisions you did ? also, remind yourself why you decided to back those winners before and always ask.. how much is dependant on luck and how much judgement ? Im sure the "punters" on here will tell you that losses are an expected part of your profession/day to day punting and that value is key to your eventual success… did you get the right value on your bets today in your opinion ? if so, you can hopefully write it down as just another "day at the office".
My strategy is a little different in that i set out to never lose… if i do then i will cut it to the minimum i can lose.. and then go through and figure out where i went wrong, either strategically – position wise or possibly mentally – which is something i find needs constant work on ;)
Good luck tomorrow Belly !

September 26, 2002 at 16:57 #100943belly,
given your level of staking you’re in for one helluva ride!!
Good luck.
September 26, 2002 at 17:02 #100944wot should i be doing staking small amounts tooting
September 26, 2002 at 17:26 #100946You need a staking plan.
A ‘5% of bank’ per bet is a good place to start. You say you now have £1500? Your next bet would be £75. If you get a 4/1 winner, you then have £1800 and the bet will be £90. If that 4/1 shot had lost, you would then be betting £70 on the next bet. Impulse betting is a sure way to the poorhouse.
I get a little annoyed when I lose. I don’t mean to but it’s just me :) But I always stick to the staking plan. Just keep it systematic.
September 26, 2002 at 18:33 #100947so wot should be my staking plan for 2morrow be then guys with bank being £1500
September 26, 2002 at 19:38 #100949belly, what are you looking for? Value winners? hand picked short-priced "certainties"? What sort of strike rate are you hitting? What’s the average price of your winners?
I’m a value punter who’s happy to hit a strike rate of just 15%. As a result I have to stake very conservatively. Tooting is the same.
If you saw the piece in the Racing Post earlier this week about pro punter Harry Findlay, you’d have seen that he is more your high risk smash-and-grab gambler. He still believes in value, of course, but he can see lots of value in odds-on shots.
It’s my belief that bad staking is one of the key reasons punters do their dough. If you want to be here in five, ten years, still on an upward curve, think carefully about the sort of winners you are looking for, and get an appropriate staking plan sorted, and stick to it.
September 26, 2002 at 20:32 #100951as those good poker players say.. its all about staying at the table.
