kersly,
It was your thread on pointers that started me posting the ratings method I use from the Racing Post, and I have been following your pointers with interest for the last three months. It is showing a healthy profit on a relatively small turnover, which is no mean feat for any method from a newspaper, and it will be interesting to see how it goes over a longer period of time. Personally, I find it very difficult to confine myself to a small number of bets at shortish odds and I don’t like the blank days, but your selective approach is looking more profitable than my scattergun approach at the moment. I am often tempted to bring in filters to improve profitability, but I don’t want to reduce the quantity of races offering prospective bets.
Another factor is that (like yourself), I calculate all returns to SP because this price is always available to a decent sized wager. Most of the horses mentioned(and we use the same sources) are available at bigger odds in the early betting markets and on the exchanges, so I would estimate that your profits(and mine) will be around 10/ 20% higher if these prices were taken.
Hi Artemis-Blank days do occur. There is another blank day today.I record the results to SP-this I feel gives a true reflection.I use Betfair(thankfully not Sporting Options!) and you can definitely improve on SP.I also run the Novice Hurdle idea which keeps the pot boiling(hopefully).Always check your posts with interest.I’m working on other ideas.Time is the enemy If I get chance I’ll post. You are right the Pointers idea hasn’t really stood the test of time as yet although the Novice Hurdle idea has in slightly different formats been successful for the last two years. If I had time I would like to add reasoning to the selections.
If I do find time to post further ideas your thoughts would be appreciated.

November 24, 2004 at 16:32 #55791Hi Paul-Pointers in its present format is in profit by 32.88 points this is over a period of about three months.
The results are calculated to SP.Taking early prices or using the exchanges has added a further 8.50 points.Just hoping it can maintain this progress but I realise it can soon go against you in this game.

November 28, 2004 at 11:45 #55798Sunday 28th Nov
Hi Carl-To qualify a horse must f/c 1/1+ in the Racing Post.Follow The Flow was f/c at 4/5.It is up to the individual if they want to include f/c ods on you will have winners but I prefer not to use them.It went with Follow The Flow as it returned 6/4.Alternatively if you have access to the live market make sure it is 1/1+ when you place your bet.
Cheers-Ollie
