Ken’s suggestion is probably no less valid than the handy ‘she was found to be in season’ excuse for a mare running below form, ‘follow fillies in the autumn’ (post oestrus) or the improvement shown by some mares in foal.

It’s a genuinely interesting area. Do sportswomen such as track-and-field athletes underperform, and do they (if given the choice) prefer to refrain from training/competition when menstruating or suffering PMT?

We mere men tand to get short shrift for discussing such matters, but like others on this thread I too have been on the receiving end when the ‘curse has come upon me’. In my experience a lady’s response to the onset of menopause has tended to be ‘thank goodness’

Ah, but you’d have to do further study to find out if they do have a ‘time of the month’ at all – some of these new injections in place of the pill get rid of them altogether!

I’m questioning my own sanity [and memory here] but a friend who was far more knowledgeable about horses than myself said that horses picked up hormonal changes in women..now, this friend was a bit wappy herself and prone to the odd exaggeration, but she knew her stuff when it came to horses.

That would be true – animals are very perceptive to pheremones so can generally pick up things like that, along with fear.

They certainly sense fear from Richard Johnson when he’s bearing down on the final hurdle at speed.

Apparently this is why women have an advantage when fishing but I don’t think Bob Nudd would agree.

Well men come into season around a full moon and thus have an unfair an advantage of exstra testosterone in their systems. Should that be declaired?

Should all jockeys hormone levels be screened before racing and the results publishd?
