The general idea of having horses compete in knockout qualifiers for a big prize (a la Greyhound Derby) is appealing. I know we have certain hurdle qualifiers but they are not marketed well and don’t have the profile they could have.

I do believe I suggested this on the RFC thread a while ago.

It’s the major area where I think Racing For Change are going wrong. While there’s a place for new initiatives & ways of getting people interested, there are are also many ways to make more of what we already have.

This is how the majority of harness stakes work-the eliminations/"legs" are held the week(s) before the final, and typically the top 3-4 finishers from each go on to the final. Often there’s a "consolation" race for the unplaced horses with a smaller purse. There’s a few stakes that are still run in multiple heats (Kentucky Futurity, Little Brown Jug), and many races at state/county fairs are run this way.

Given that the majority of Thoroughbreds don’t race every week, you’d have to spread the elims out 3-4 weeks prior to the final. That’s how Quarter Horse stakes as well as certain Thoroughbred futurities typically do it.
