Has anyone posted thoughts on using place-only betting on the exchanges?
Yesterday, I came out ahead, thanks to such cover bets.
Now I’m wondering if such a higher (much) strike rate at lower returns has been aired before.Any thoughts on this?

Lay
button!
Although try not to win too much or Betfair will steal some of it off you.
April 3, 2011 at 11:30 #348476And indeed I’m grateful to anyone laying!

Seriously, I’ve not tried it as I think it’s a different mind-set entirely; I’m used to backing and expect to keep doing that.
April 3, 2011 at 13:53 #348487Hi there
Think there is a thread about this on systems section started originally by Billion sround the turn of the year.
If memory serves me he tried this for around a month but then decided the high strike rate needed and returns he had shown resulted in him not pursuing
However may be worth a look at to get some ideas from.

April 4, 2011 at 12:27 #348591Only once did I ever back a horse place-only on Betfair
It won the race at SP 50/1 (no BF SP at that time but I dread to think what it was trading at pre-race)
I swore that day that I would never again back a horse place-only

That shows part of the problem though. Whilst a 3 place market can be gotten down to near enough 300% the place market is still dictated by the win shows and the short priced runners are still often under priced as general place terms are not favourable. Where the place price is favourable on a larger priced horse you may as well back it each way.April 5, 2011 at 12:29 #348719This is what I do. I back a horse to win and if I can get 2/1 or bigger a place I will put 4 times as much as I had to win on. So for example if I have £5 to win I would put £20 a place but only if I can get 2/1 or bigger for the place.
