Sad news , but probably the right decision made at the right time.
Elder statesman in the sport, who, in my opinion, was extremely tactically savvy.
His partnership with the late Michael Jarvis was one that rewarded me well when investing, and both seemed to compliment each other.
Only British jockey ever to be champion in Hong Kong (twice).
I wish him well for a long and happy retirementOctober 1, 2011 at 11:00 #372626

It’s a pity that his hip injury, from which he’d seemed to make such a strong recovery, has cut short such an excellent career. For someone whose great racing brain more than made up for comparative lack of strength, he could have carried on at the top of his game for some years yet.
My own personal favourites were his excellent rides on
New Seeker
, on whom he won both the
Royal Hunt Cup
and
International
in 2005 with tactically astute rides.
I hope he has a go at training: he’ll make a good one if he does.

Such a shame he agreed to ride as retained rider for the owner linked to Brittan. Just as the horses find some form he is ditched. Hardly seems fair.
Anyway Good Luck Philip!
October 2, 2011 at 09:56 #372711A Honourable retirement for an honourable man , end of an era , gone the days when a Newmarket maiden , money poured on the Jarvis/Robinson Combo …..time to bet like men , as they rarely left it behind …
A lot has been made of his tactical nous , but more times than not he just kept it simple …if only others would follow
Enjoy retirement Philip , you deserve it

PR= perfectly reliable and he very seldom never got the job done.
If he took out in cash as much as he put into the game in effort he’d be a millionaire thrice over and deserve every penny of it.
Hopefully this is not the end and the start of a new beginning.
Anyone know if he plans to train or breed perhaps?

I believe that he has passed the first part of his trainers qualification. I don’t think that he has made a definite decision yet as to whether to train. I’d personally like to see him give it a go, and wish him every success if he does so.
