Awful to hear confirmation that Peso was also lost after being pulled up sharply.
    Condolences to all connections.
What a horrible day for racing.
    RIP Peso

Come on, he was 20 lengths behind and badly struggling with a circuit to go. Why not pull up when the horse shows no enthusiasm? What went wrong after he crossed the road?

    Poor horse….

    RIP Peso

I saw the race & I thought the worst. I am truly saddened that he lost his life today. I was on holiday in the Cotswolds over Christmas & whilst out walking I had the fortune to actually see Peso at the end of one of his training gallops. So to see he was running today I placed a small wager & now I wished I hadn’t. I do, however, agree with a previous poster & wonder why Jonjo didn’t pull him up. He had made an earlier mistake & I thought he didn’t run well afterwards, so very sad. RIP Peso you lovely boy 🥀😥.
It has truly been a dreadful day at Kempton today & racing welfare will no doubt have a field day

Such a sad week and I have found it very difficult to hear about so many beautiful horses lost.

Peso sounded a real dude Jusbluey and you shouldn’t feel guilty of having a wager on him, so many of us would have done the same under the circumstances. :rose:

Once again Ruby raises a worrying but valid point as to why JJ did’nt pull his horse up when he was tired and had no chance of gaining a place. He really should have known better.

RIP dear brave Peso 🌹💔 😪

My interpretation of the events around Peso’s sad demise is a bit different.

He was pulled up mid-race before tiredness is likely to have been an issue. The horse had been struggling to go the pace, but was no further behind at the time he was pulled up than he had been for a while, and was far from hopelessly tailed off. Plenty of horses have stayed on to win or be placed from similar positions.

The fatality rate at Kempton on Saturday was unacceptably high, and it’s important that the causes are understood. However, I didn’t see anything to make me think jockey fault was a primary cause of Peso’s sad death.

On another day the horse could have stayed on to win, and everyone would be saying what a brilliant ride it was that O’Neill didn’t give up.

I agree that Peso was badly outpaced early but had got back to a deficit that didn’t warrant pulling up at the stage he went lame.

Good discussion on here for and against Marlingford and pilgarlic.
Sadly it doesn’t bring poor Peso back.
I didn’t see the race, I find it difficult to watch jump racing nowadays and only going by comments made afterwards.
Only JJ could judge if his horse was strong enough to battle on that day but sadly he wasn’t and Peso lost his life.😪

He got back into the race just because the front pair eased down a bit, but was still 6-8 lengths adrift. Fact is Peso was slow at the 2nd, didn’t get his feet in the air at the 5th and was very slow at the 7th (the final fence he jumped). I doubt he would have finished within a furlong of the first two. He just didn’t have it, because there was something amiss after jumping two or three fences. The very same day the was an article in the RP about the O’Neills and how bad things have been so far this season.

People are just too tolerant when trainers go like one from 110 and still have runners instead of closing the shop down for 2-3 weeks. But, it’s good to run an unfit horse, if you want to get his mark down. It’s common practice, it’s how it has always been done.

I bet none of them would have the balls to do such stunts in Hong Kong or Japan. None of them……

Thank you Triptych, as someone who loves horses & horse racing I was so chuffed (even at my age) to actually come across Jonjo O’neill’s training establishment & to see Peso. I firmly believe that the horse was feeling something wrong as his jumping wasn’t fluent & he often stuttered into the fences after he made a mistake. Whatever I think it won’t bring him back & for all the horses I’ve seen lose their lives in this sport, this loss has deeply saddened me. Later in the week I went for a walk in Naunton in the hope of seeing NTD racing yard, sadly I did see his home but no horses. However, one of his lads told me that Ben Pauling trained close by, so we headed there. Wow what an amazing place my excitement increased when I cheekily asked a stable lass if I could enter the yard & take some photos & I was allowed too. Even better I was asked if I would like to meet The Jukebox Man, as if. So I got to meet the horse & take photo’s, this completely made my holiday :-)

Jusbluey, sorry to hear that the loss of Peso has hit you hard. These things are difficult enough even without having fond memories from seeing the horse in real life.

That sounds a great experience meeting The Jukebox Man. Lovely to hear that they made you so welcome at the yard, and it’s nice to read of something positive in this often sad part of the forum.

Such a heartening story Jusbluey and hope meeting The Jukebox Man at Ben Pauling’s yard helped a little to heal the sadness you felt at the loss of Peso. I remember it was the loss of One Man that finally put the cap on my love of NH racing although I have come back to it because of all the wonderful characters that come back year after year I find I can’t watch it on TV until I know all the horses are ok.

I always dread visiting this section of the Forum and as sad as it is I feel it comforting that we can afford these beautiful horses the respect they deserve as a final farewell.

Keep enjoying your racing Jusbluey it’s been an unusually tough week for all of us who love the sport. :rose:

Can I just ask while you were at Ben Pauling’s yard if you happened to see Bad, he is one of my favourites a beautiful grey you couldn’t miss him and he runs on Saturday.

I still have the locket which I put One Man’s name in and wore it for quite a while after his tragic death. I cried for a week.

Sorry for late reply Tryptych yes I did see Bad & have a couple of photos of him on my phone  He too is one of my favourites & I think a bit of a character. I notice he is running today & I pray he stays safe.

I remember the loss of so many horses, particularly One Man & Grey Sombrero who was leading in the Grand National when he broke his shoulder, heartbreaking.

I have loved horse racing most of my life but one thing that really does upset me is when I see horses who have obviously run their race continually being urged to carry on, which often ends with tired falls.

Thanks for your reply Jusbluey and like myself you’ll be relieved that Bad has come home safely at Ascot today and ran a cracker.

Your thoughts echo the thoughts of most of us who post on this Thread. There is nothing better than being up close to these beautiful souls and memories of those we loved and lost stay with us forever. 🌷
