I’m quite bias about the meeting, mainly because George Margeson ran ‘Young Mick’ in the poxy 12f handicap there, won, went up 4lb to 100, and then got chinned in his main target, the Ebor, two weeks later.
Me and my mate had been backing him for the Ebor for months at fancy prices. We were on for nearly a (North East prices admittedly!) house-buying payout if he won. I remain convinced he would have won a neck at least off 96. It was an absolute sickener, and an absolutely bizarre / stupid decision by connections. Ebor was worth over £150k more in prize money from memory.
Bitter? You bet!

April 5, 2021 at 12:21 #1534553the Queen doesn’t even turn out for this one. She’s much too busy polishing her crown whilst putting the kettle on and ensuring the crusts are cut of her salmon and cucumber sandwiches.
Venison and Haggis sarnies I expect as lucky old HM spends August in the Highlands at Balmoral; and I doubt any race meeting, save perhaps one at Perth, would drag her away from that sumptuous refuge
The Shergar Cup is an inconsequential aberration well suited to ‘silly season’ and that awkward hiatus ‘twixt Goodwood and York
It’s been held for over 20 years now, so someone must like it
April 5, 2021 at 12:55 #1534560The Tatling Cheekily,
Young Mick had a 7 pound penalty in the Ebor, originally on 93. Presumably with it being an early closer he received 4 pounds for his previous Ascot win and this was increased to 7 pounds for his Shergar Cup follow up.
In hindsight he would have probably won the Ebor with the lesser weight but connections obviously thought a bird in the hand etc as they still collected over 76 grand for the 2 Ascot wins and Ebor 3rd. Would have got 124 grand for winning The Ebor.April 5, 2021 at 12:59 #1534564Young Mick ran a fifth of his 58 races at Ascot his trainer was convinced he was 10lb better there. Had it been good that day at York you’d have had your two up two down cheekily won. He won his next race at Ascot so was on a roll. 50k should not cause 15 years of hurt – simply wipe it from the memory banks gangman style.

Hang onto it – it’s the ones that got away that you remember
My one is Just So (or Just Slow as he was affectionately known) in the 1994 National when he was beaten by bloody Miinnehoma – it would have been a life changing win (OK having backed him at prices from 80’s down to 33’s it was still a reasonable E/W return) but I still cringe when they show the replays of that race.
April 5, 2021 at 15:10 #15345811985 Grand National – 20/1 West Tip ante-post, 25/1 Mr Snugfit win only, the pair in a combination tricast with Greasepaint and Corbiere….and, after West Tip fell when cantering second Becher’s (won next year a stone higher) and Mr Snugfit had come from nowhere to lead the other pair over the last, that tail-swishing 50/1 beast Last Suspect, with Hywel Davies putting up 5lb overweight, mowed me down on the run in and left me with nothing on the race.
I was just getting over the flu at the time – I had a bloody relapse!

Think he was pricewise and ended up only 20/1. What price would he have been running off his correct mark? Dunwoody made all the difference to that result imo.
The one that immediately springs to mind with me is Pelorus in the 1988 Magnet Cup, hard to believe it’s 33 years ago but I still have visions of Nicky Carlisle twitching in the stalls just before the start. I think I knew watching him what was going to happen in the race and it did. Got a big chance and made a complete pigs ear of it, should have won hard held.
Incidentally because of all the money for Pelorus, Bashful Boy was the first pricewise winner that was returned at a bigger price than the one recommended (11/1).April 6, 2021 at 11:38 #1534661Yeats …. yes I started backing him about three to four weeks before when I saw the long range forecast with plenty of rain – it was the muddier the better for him
April 6, 2021 at 20:03 #1534746Cheltenham 1986; I had a disastrous 1st day, a catastrophic 2nd day, until out of the blue my two placepot tickets came up. My luck was then in, and day 3 I backed winners all the way (inc Dawn Run ante-post).
The last race was the County Hurdle, typically competitive, but I really fancied Jobroke (5-1) and taelos (14-1) for the forecast. On my way to the ring I met someone I knew; “Dromoland Lad,” he said, “The stable say he can’t lose.” So I changed my bet, and of course my original choices breezed in.
But I did learn an important lesson; for racing, for medicine, for life. Anyone can give you advice; the decision to accept it or not is yours. - AuthorPosts
