Anyone have any favourite horses that for whatever reason (unfashionable / trainer / running style) that we’re consistently overpriced.
To kick off
Albertas Run- 3 time festival winner at odds of 4/1, 6/1 and 14/1. Twice followed up at Aintree at odds of 8/1 and 5/2 (against only 2 rivals) did the maths one day and I think he was around 40+ points up throughout his career
Ramonti- champion miler with a fairly unflattering front running style. Consistently beat excellent art but every time was bigger price
January 24, 2018 at 20:16 #1338920Carlingford Lough is the one that immediately came to mind, though I’ve never backed him. 46.6 points profit to a level stake over the course of his career to date.
January 24, 2018 at 20:47 #1338923Premio Loco was a winner 16 times from 50 starts including odds of 20/1, 25/1, 14/1 and 10/1 and was over 40 points up to a level stake. It was nearly even better as he was beaten in the Royal Hunt cup by 3/4 of a length to Belgium Bill at odds of 40/1.
Gaelic Warrior Gold Cup Winner 2026

Winning SPs 16/1, 22/1, 11/2, 15/2, 20/1, 11/4, 8/1, 8/1, 10/1, 10/1, 20/1, 10/1. 12 wins from 87 starts with a huge LSP.
Always written off by the market after a few poor runs but strike rate from marks in the mid 70s is exceptional.
What a great little mare.
January 24, 2018 at 21:37 #1338928Some horses just aren’t sexy to the betting public. Hence the value.
January 24, 2018 at 22:08 #1338929Albertas Run was one of my most profitable horses. Many were put off by the Timeform squiggle which was an error on Timeform’s part. All the horse needed was genuine good ground.
January 24, 2018 at 22:23 #1338931Bob’s Return won 5 races out of 15 at SPs of 12/1 14/1 14/1 16/1 and just 3/1 when winning the Leger.
January 24, 2018 at 22:57 #1338935I forgot to mention En Attendant trained by the ‘champion’ himself.
20/1 – 5/1 – 7/1 – 14/1 – 11/1 – 14/1 and he was a multiple Bunbury Cup winner.January 25, 2018 at 00:09 #1338939This will be a wee bit “aftertimey”, but these are the ones who’ll always stand out for me…..
Aranhill Chief – For 3 summers in a row, this boy would win at very decent odds. Went for a four timer from him this year, and though he didn’t quite get his nose in front, he was still available at 20’s and 25’s for his first 2 runs, and as per, he made the frame.
A New Story – One for the big occasion, and lost count the number of times I got a good lift from him. Continually double figure prices, and just an incredible horse to follow. Loved that old boy.
Cause of Causes – Really impressed with him in The 2012 Ladbroke Hurdle, and followed him closely ever since, as I may have mentioned once or twice. Has been an unbelievable “target” horse, and some of his prices for the races that matter, not only on the day, but in The Ante-Post Market have been ridiculous. An absolute legend, and though now getting priced accordingly, it will remain a mystery why he was available at 20’s for a good while for last seasons Cross Country. He is currently available at 33’s for this years National.
Double Ross – I’ve had a “Dry January” for betting, and this boy is one of only 2 half decent bets I’ve had this year. He’s maybe getting on a bit now, going by his run that day, but the number of times he went off far too big was incredible. He didn’t win, but getting placed in last season Hennessey was probably the highlight. I had him as a 10, 12-1 shot at best, he was 125’s in the morning. 125’s. FFS
Monkerhostin – One of my favourite horses ever, and one of the most underrated of recent times. Still can’t believe he didn’t beat Kicking King in The King George at Sandown, but his two runs there in 2010, along with his wins in The Coral Cup, The Haldon Gold Cup, and particularly The 2008 Bet365 Gold Cup, were all real highlights.

Remember thinking it was quite a poor ride from Scudamore when watching it live. Held up out of his ground, allowed Kicking King first run, made several mistakes (including crucial one at the last), stayed-on strongly and closed all the way to the line, couldn’t quite get up. In Scu’s defence, old Monkey wasn’t fully proven at 3m at the time and might have been ‘ridden to get the trip’ – little did they know he’d be winning a Whitbread within a couple of years!
January 25, 2018 at 14:13 #1338989Aye, Bobby, Monkerhostin is a great shout. 7/1 13/2 10/1 25/1 20/1 among his winning prices. Loved that horse.
January 25, 2018 at 14:32 #1338995Cheers Joe, and John. Just loved him, and that Whitbread of 2008 will live long in the memory. I dined out on that one for a while. I wasn’t on Betfair when he was subject to that incredible gamble in The National in 2007, but I wish I had been, would have made a packet, but he didn’t like it that much lol
January 28, 2018 at 14:36 #1339595Cause of Causes is a cracking shout.
January 28, 2018 at 22:42 #1339657I remember Rayvin Black a few seasons ago finishing top 2 in right handed handicap hurdles but never being the favourite.
