EC – believe you me, I am no "soft arse" bleeding-heart liberal type – far from it!!
We do happen to disagree on this one matter – the horse was behaving very badly and needed some sort of remonstration – however head-butting it was not the answer in the slightest. But on the other hand I’m one of the last people who would be advocating the release of murderers – these situations are not the same in the slightest! I also still feel that there is too much being made out of this and people are getting a bit carried away with it all, after all, he hardly touched the horse so a lifetime ban from riding, RSPCA action et al is far too draconian do you not think? ÂÂÂ
Let’s have a bit of perspective – if the horse had behaved like that in a yard it would have received a fair few stripes on it’s backside at the very least.

July 24, 2006 at 11:40 #73778Saw the incident. I would think the use of the whip on the horse (or any horse) during a race would have been more "painful" than that headbutt.
July 24, 2006 at 12:50 #73779Ate some bacon for breakfast this morning, so not really able to comment.
But continuing the Daily Mail theme – I am worried that the headbutting incident may affect house prices. I blame Tony Blair.
July 24, 2006 at 21:11 #73780Had O’Neill been watching Zinedine Zidane?
July 24, 2006 at 21:27 #73781Guess what…two years in Denmark and I have never seen anything to do with English or any other internationl horse racing event and then tonight, guess what gets on as the very last news item on the evening news. Good old Paul!!

July 24, 2006 at 21:30 #73782Hate to see animls being abused but IMO this does not fall within that category.
Simply a rash display of petulance for which he has publically apologised.
Suitable for a ban under the improper riding rules but unworthy of RSPCA involvement to have him criminally prosecuted and banned from working with animals using donors cash.
I would consider TJ Murphy now generally the most sympathetic of NH riders as his new retainer with Hen Knight indicates but the same "ban him for life" advocates were after him when he threw his whip after a mount which was galloping off after falling with him at Plumpton.Local stewards gave him a 10 day ban reduced to 1 on appeal.
Need to keep things in proportion.
July 25, 2006 at 16:40 #73783Well it made the Local News in upstate New York! So thousands of Americans now think that British based jockeys are worthless scum.
Fantastic for British racing (NOT) just at a time when it really doesnt need it.
Until we start really cracking down on idiots hard we’re always going to have five times the problems we should have both in society and in sport. Off topic I know but there are more murders now percentage wise than when Jack The Ripper was around in the 1800’s. I wonder why.
Holding breath and waiting for the excuse making bleeding hearts brigade to wake to reality. Won’t hold breath too long though.
I’ve seen this incident on the news, the guy is an idiot no other word for it and no excuse whatsoever. Boot him out!!

July 25, 2006 at 18:36 #73785It was hardly a headbutt. More like on the tip of the nose than anything else. What was a little more disconcerting was the way he was yanking on the reins when leading the horse off.
He lost his temper, simple as. He’ll get seven days, or something similar.
July 25, 2006 at 19:19 #73786Head butting horses is plain wrong .. but if a horse head butts you you cant really get your own back because they are only animals, like a cows or a zebras and dont understand laws.
But if someone from Lebanon does something wrong then you can go and actually kill loads of them and no-one seems to mind that much.
July 25, 2006 at 21:40 #73787Interesting what the length of the ban will be.
Didn’t Eddie Ahern get 4 days a couple of years ago for kicking a filly in the belly at the start at Bath?
July 25, 2006 at 21:48 #73788One day ban maybe?What a load of fuss about nothing-reminds me of the Deano’s Beano ‘affair’ :o
July 25, 2006 at 21:52 #73789but we aren’t making that comparison Dave
EC Posted on 9:27 pm on July 25, 2006
Maybe thats the problem .. I would imagine that the horse never even noticed.
July 25, 2006 at 22:29 #73790.. I dont know if Im going to miss your point or not I havent decided yet ..
July 25, 2006 at 22:39 #73791Quote: from EC on 11:25 pm on July 25, 2006[br]most non racing people won’t think it’s "nothing"
neither do I..it was ugly viewing
if you can’t see that then there ain’t much I can do to make the point anymore
put it this way..do you think it encouraged a positive view of horse racing?..particularly to a child..who may or may not get interested in racing as they grow up..you know..the future racing fans..or lack of ..due to images like this
see where I am coming from..or are you going to completely miss my point?;)
So we should hand out stronger punishments because of how it was percieved by the less educated. And because it Looked ugly?? In truth, in terms of the public image of the racing I can see the point of this but in real terms, thats not justice.

A flaw in traditional horsemanship is behind Paul O’Neill’s head-butt on City Affair
July 26, 2006 at 20:45 #73793Racing i agree on the impact to the horse was miminal, it was the end of the jockeys cap that caught the horse, but horse racing is a global affair now, intent is intent and should be punished accordingly, if you or i did that on the street to someone what would we be facing, iwill let you answer that
