I was thinking this myself as some of his runners that I thought would win have come up short so far this season.
Now I always thaought a trainer knew how fit a horse was by his training methods and watching them on the gallops.
Then he says this in the RP
Nicholls watched on at Exeter as the well-regareded pair Far West and Alcala were defeated and expressed surprise at the 14-1 victory of Morito Du Berlais.
Why was he surprised or does he not quite know what is going on?
His comment ade me laugh though.October 21, 2014 at 19:09 #493085I’ve flagged this up on my blog recently too.
So many of his early runners have travelled very strongly, then wilted in the finish. Calipto, Vivaldi Collonges, As De Mee, Emerging Talent (granted a hard puller) and Vibrato Valtat (granted a bit woofy) have all been good examples.
Nicholls commented after Morito Du Berlais stormed home today that he has never known a season where it has been so hard to get horses fit. He seemed to hint that he hasn’t changed his regime.
October 21, 2014 at 19:29 #493087So its too early to think ST-D won’t be stable jockey this time next year? Fair enough if the horses aren’t fit but he was being easily outridden by jockeys such as Richard Johnson at Exeter today.

Its nonsense to suggest sam will be replaced , by the end of the season I confidently predict he will be compared to a young Ruby Walsh ….give him a chance , wait till the stable hits form . then you will see if Dickie can out ride him ….its fair to say that P Hobbs stable is flying at the moment
October 22, 2014 at 09:43 #493128I am not a particular fan of Twiston-Davies but if you have made your name riding positively you would hardly want to be going out riding a string of unfit horses.
Comes down to what you can get away. If Nicholls had 20 horses and was struggling for owners would they be sent out similarly unfit?
October 22, 2014 at 12:20 #493145Perhaps he is not getting the quality of horses he used to via France. He’s run a few new ones so far this season and they have been fairly unimpressive. In fact he has had nearly as many PU’s as winners so far. The addition of daughter Megan probably will not add to his tally of winners.
October 22, 2014 at 12:31 #493148I’d not overstate the significance of Megan appearing on some of dad’s horses at the present time.
Once the Pointing season resumes five weeks on Sunday, she’s going to be spending an awful lot more time in that sphere than the Rules one, with a view to securing her first National Women’s Title – pretty much from day one, I’d have thought, assuming there’s anything being lined up for her to ride at Black Forest Lodge.
Gwanako (provided her with six Pointing winners last term but rumoured to have been retired now) and Join Together (six more Pointing wins but rumoured to be out for the season) probably won’t be available to her, but I’m sure some way-too-good-for-most-Point-races cast-offs from the main Ditcheat string will be, assuming all eligibility criteria have been met.

Adoptive father of two. The patron saint of lower-grade fare. A gently critical friend of point-to-pointing. Kindness is a political act.
October 22, 2014 at 13:20 #493150Does that cause a bit of resentment gc or are pointing folk pretty easy going about such things?

It varies from one Pointing fan to the next, Moe – both in terms of the horses in question and Miss Nicholls herself!
You do hear the odd word at some Points from people who’d like Megan to get decked in a race every once in a while, albeit mostly to rid her of some of her more (allegedly) conceited mannerisms rather than through any out-and-out envy of who she is and what she has at her disposal.
There’s inevitably the sense among several that it would be tricky not to win her share on Join Together and Gwanako. That does her some disservice, however, with victory on the former at Charlton Horethorne back in March by all accounts a bloody good ride.
I didn’t venture into either the Wessex or Devon & Cornwall Areas too much last season, though, so am yet to see her ride in a Point at close hand. I’ve never interviewed her yet either, so can’t comment on how she is as a person.

Well thats a relief for the owners at Ditcheat! Who wants to chuff out the thick end of 2k a month training fees to accommodate Ms Nicholls. Her riding skills under rules so far have been less than eye catching. Harry Derham was given top class steering jobs to ride and that didn’t exactly make him the next McCoy. Just because you have the best available does not necessarily make you a talented jockey.
October 23, 2014 at 06:57 #493193Virak gave the stable a welcome winner yesterday, turning over Deputy Dan on his chase beau but his stable still seem slow to hand, and wouldn’t expect them to be at full fitness until next month’s Paddy Power meeting, where he normally aims plenty for.
October 24, 2014 at 19:40 #493297Nicholls’ own five to follow

October 26, 2014 at 14:49 #493536I note that nicholls is going to run silvinaco conti in the Charlie hall so as not to need the run in the betfair chase.
But then is once again running him between Boxing Day and the gold cup,I can’t help wondering if that will be the plan for gold cup horses in the future and beyond?October 26, 2014 at 19:17 #493547Megan is changing to racing on the flat and may be moving to Newmarket possibly riding out for Michael Bell to begin with.
