….without falling. Had a PU after 18 fences in the 2008 GN and from 2009-2013 he finished every time no worse than 4th. Some achievement I would say. Does anyone have any similar stats about other jockeys from the past?
December 30, 2013 at 19:34 #463533Ruby,
Neale Doughty completed seven Grand Nationals without mishap until he fell at the 20th on Rinus in 1991, so just taking the National into account that would be 229 fences.
Ruby Walsh also has an excellent record in The National. Of his 11 rides, he’s completed 9 times, and on the other 2 occasions, he got as far as second Bechers on Shotgun Willy, and fell at 2nd Valentines this year so that’s……if my maths is right, 315 fences before he fell in The National.
This doesn’t, obviously take into account Becher Chases, Grand Seftons, and Tophams.
December 30, 2013 at 19:38 #463534Good post VtC,
however Moloney is not necessarly one of he big names in the NH game. However he seems to be extremely consistent over fences and has a good hand for long distances. Could easily make a good trainer one day.

He remounted Papillon in Red Marauder’s National having been unseated when hampered at the nineteenth fence.

December 30, 2013 at 23:59 #463568Hey Rob, fair point, but decided as it wasn’t his fault not to include it.
I deliberately didn’t mention that incident as Papillon didn’t even get near the fence to unseat. When the loose horse ran across, Ruby was thrown into the mouth of the ditch, and the horse remained on the take off side.
Bloody loved that race
