Paul Hanagan does not avoid riding at Newmarket. He is stable jockey to Richard Fahey who shock horror trains in the North. If Richard deems he has a horse with a winning chance at Newmarket I’m sure that’s where PH will ride.
I don’t understand the elitist attitude towards Newmarket, it holds approx 38 meetings per season which is a drop in the ocean compared to the full fixture list. It isn’t hallowed turf it’s just grass like the rest of them!August 22, 2010 at 22:02 #314295AnonymousInactive- Total Posts 17716
Id have to disagree and say he does avoid Newmarket in favour of less competitive racing up North where he wont face his jockey title rivals…
At Carlisle tomorow Hanagan will mainly be riding against the following jockeys
Adrian Nicholls
P J McDonald
Paul Pickard
David Allan
James Sullivan
Andrew Mullen
Michael O’Connell
Patrick Mathers
Barry McHughAt Kempton tomorow Hughes will mainly be riding against the following jockeys
K Fallon
T Queally
E Ahern
D O Neill
C Caitlin
T E Durcan
M Dwyer
S Saunders
G Baker
L DettoriWith no disrespect to either list which venue do you think represents the harder option in terms of competing against other jockeys when you consider experience/success/strength/knowledge.
Obviously we all know its very much dependant on what horse a jockey is riding but ignore the horses for a second which set of jockeys would you prefer riding against if you want to ride winners?
If winning races is 90% horse/10% jockey then fair enough, but you must admit the opposition Hanagan faces in terms of that 10% is much inferior than his rivals in the title race on a daily basis.
August 22, 2010 at 22:34 #314299I repeat, he is retained by Richard Fahey who trains in Malton, North Yorkshire. Where PH rides is dependent upon where RF has runners. What do you expect him to do, say sod you & my retainer Richard, I’m going down South to ride against better jockeys. What a load of twaddle.
It is obvious that Southern based jockeys have the majority of rides in the South & Northern based ones in the North. That does not mean they are inferior.
Did you forget to mention Jamie Spencer is riding in a Claimer at Hamilton tomorrow?
I’ll tell you another Northern based jockey going places (& I don’t mean Newmarket) Silvestre De Sousa.August 23, 2010 at 01:50 #314315Hanagan should smash it but I personally prefer Richard Hughes, he’s had some fantastic rides this year with Hannons horses and a nice guy in general!
Would love to see a close championship rather than 1 jockey running away with it.

August 23, 2010 at 13:57 #314373thing is you can look at this both ways
hanagan rides in worse races in yorkshire without a doubt.however this can mean he is riding horses that are of a lower quality and that take alot more effort to win with.although moore rides in better and often competitive races at the big meetings he also gets the rides on some horses that are world class and only need guiding home with less effort
easiest way to solve this would be to have two awards, top jockey in terms of wins and the highest earning jockey in winnings.either way il be happy with any of the 3 to win it
August 23, 2010 at 17:58 #314405I may be in a tiny minority but I don’t think that the jockeys title is all over. Although I would agree that Hanagan is favourite I am just beginning to wonder whether Mr Fahey’s horses are starting to go off the boil in certain cases. He has maintained a wins : runners ratio of well over 14% all season long. However in the last 2 weeks this has dipped below 10%. The same statistics for Hanagan have fallen from 18% to under 10%.
August 23, 2010 at 19:56 #314418By my reckoning thats 28 consecutive losers for Hanagan, and only 1 winner in 27 runners for Mr Fahey. Hardly the form imo to make the jockeys title a certainty
