With the news that Paul has broken his leg again riding out at home (the same 1 he’s been recovering from after a break in September, see picture below) is it safe to assume that we won’t see him back in the saddle again now he’s in his 40’s or am i getting carried away?
He’s a jockey that tended to polarise opinion but i was certainly on the side that loved him and some of his rides were a joy to behold, Frenchmans creek and Belvanno both at the festival were things of beauty and his ride on Monbeg Dude in the Welsh National was one that made you think for the last 2 or 3 fences “he can’t get him up surely?”but of course he did. Swinging out of the rafters after his Grand National win on Bobbyjo is another memorable moment for the somewhat extrovert Carberry and at times that wildness found him trouble off the track but that’s for another day.

Perhaps his most famous ride is his losing one on Harchibald in the Champion hurdle in 2005 when he came there motionless only for Harchibald to not go through with it when asked a question, some call it a masterclass of a ride and others call it awful but he’s adamant that’s the only way the horse had a chance and we’ll never know for certain but his next race when he followed his trainers orders to send the horse on if he was going well suggest Carberrys ride at Cheltenham leaving it until the last minute was best as when he got to the front travelling smoothly he downed tools and was outbattled by Brave Inca.

If it is the last we see of him on a racecourse it’s a sad day for the sport and it will be a long time before we see a jockey as talented as him arrive on the racing scene again.

Carberry can say what he likes about 2005 but he gave Harchibald about 100 yards to go past a champion hurdler up the Cheltenham Hill.
There were no such problems beating Rooster Booster at Kempton but he went and won the race then. There was no mickey taking involved that day.

I wish him all the best with the recovery. A mercurial jockey who won on many of my selections but too often he’s been the Jamie Spencer of the jumps circuit and been too concerned with passing the whole field in the straight and winning by a head
