The horse im sure was called Past something…i remember when i was young my father always having a bet on this horse, he was ridden i think by Andy Turnell , colours being red with black cap or visa versa,,, think colours belonged to Jim Joel..?,thing about this horse was that he refused to race more than he did, but when he did decide to race he would win … im going back years now , any of the "older Racing people remember him ?
January 17, 2008 at 19:24 #136036If it was around 87-88’ish and running in 2 mile hurdles, Jim Joel had a horse trained by Josh Gifford called Lypento (?) that I seem to recall had a similar profile.
January 17, 2008 at 20:18 #136049You could be talking about Pas Suel trained by Bob Turnell and ridden by Bill Rees but who owned him I have no idea.
Can’t think of any horse owned by Jim Joel with the name Past……….knew a few who wouldn’t go past like Beacon Light
Wish you luck with that one got me beat
January 17, 2008 at 20:42 #136056This isn’t the horse you are thinking of because he had nothing to do with Andy Turnell but I seem to remember Vodkatini becoming something of a punter’s nightmare.
January 17, 2008 at 21:01 #136063Past Master? 10 y o gelding in 1963. Not that I remember him of course
January 17, 2008 at 22:15 #136083Past Glories? Might have run in the Cesarewitch. A useful hurdler afterwards.
January 18, 2008 at 10:15 #136137Past Master (by Master Owen) was a once consistent hurdler for J Bower (owned by D Dipple). In the 71/72 season, as a 5yo, he won 6 of his 15 starts and placed in 5 others – usually ridden by a claimer S Coathup who took 5lbs off and obviously had a good rapport with him.
In January 75 he was still winning useful races like the Wills Handicap Hurdle at Haydock – still for the same connections but with John Suthern in the plate.
However he later tranferred to D Plant and the Bill Clay’s yards and he became a thorough dodge pot. He rarely jumped off and even if he did he gave everybody a good start.
January 18, 2008 at 13:00 #136174hi Adrian,
Thanks for putting me right on that one, I must have got the year wrong, however I thought that Reg Crank rode this Past Master at some point??

My mate John Quinn rode him in the Champion to a place……..Bill Elsey had him for a time and I think he did run in the Ces…..but would go past anything far from being a rougue
January 18, 2008 at 18:21 #136237It was either 1960 something or 1970 something….my dad always followed Bob and Andy Turnell , and Jim Joel , and it was definatley NH… I was only young then but remember those names vividly….Pastmaster does seem familiar Ulgy Mare…Wish I could remember more…..
January 18, 2008 at 18:37 #136242….me too, I know the feeling
January 18, 2008 at 18:44 #136245Im going to try and get in touch with Andy Turnell and ask him …..because its driving me mad now….. I can even see the horse at the start line in my head refusing to move !!!
January 18, 2008 at 18:55 #136249I’ve done some digging and Past Master (who had the right profile if not the right connections) used to run in Orange, green chevrons and green cap.
January 18, 2008 at 20:24 #136265Adrian do you think it is the horse i mean…? the Turnell/Joel connection being that i can remember only those names, may have confused me, as i was young at the time….
January 18, 2008 at 20:39 #136270Can’t think of any horse owned by Jim Joel with the name Past……….knew a few who wouldn’t go past like Beacon Light
You must be getting mixed up with Birds Nest who used to hang all over the shop, Beacon Light was a thoroughly genuine individual.
January 19, 2008 at 02:10 #136326I wasn’t getting mixed up Jim Joel never owned Bird’s Nest………Beacon Light on several occasions reminded me of Birds Nest came there cruising then went out like a light..Tree Tangle was much the same……probably more down to the way Andy rode them than the horse not being genuine as we were discussing the other day on a thread……….The one about the jockeys who ride in a fashion where you think the horse is going better than he is…..Andy was the first Jockey I mentioned………anyway he’s a big quite lad and wouldn’t want us talking about him
I pretty much remember most of his dad’s horses as I was a big fan even have my email (rondetto) named after one of his…..damned if I know any horse he trained with the name "Past" in it…….. but maybe you hit the nail on the head and it could it be his dad was betting Birds Nest and kept saying that fooking horse just won’t go "past"?……….as he says he was young at the time………
January 19, 2008 at 10:07 #136355Thanks everyone who has tried to fathom out who this horse was ….Past ? is still in my mind though, ….I remember Birds Nest , and im sure the Turnell Connection wasnt the only horses he followed …If anything else pops into the old grey cells i will let you know…..
FOF this is for your info, he is a SHE….a lot older
