After what have been a very sad few weeks for lives cut short on the racecourse, it was nice to read the much happier story of the life of Papineau, the 2004 Ascot Gold Cup winner, who has just passed away aged 24.
It sounds as if he had a wonderful and varied life after retirement from racing, most recently acting as a therapy horse at a hospice due to his gentle nature. There’s more about his life in this Racing Post article https://www.racingpost.com/bloodstock/news/he-did-even-more-for-others-in-his-retirement-as-he-did-throughout-his-career-death-of-gold-cup-winner-papineau-at-24-aWwGt5I0MD44/.
RIP Papineau
February 4, 2024 at 22:44 #1679967This is the news you kind of ‘want’ to see here, if that makes sense – a peaceful passing after a long and happy retirement! Such a contrast to the sad ends for so many young horses over the past few days. Condolences to those who loved him but glad that he lived to a good age and had what seems to have been a great life.

A life well lived and one to celebrate.
What a wonderful Ambassador Papineau was to horseracing.
Things turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...February 7, 2024 at 17:51 #1680259Reminds me of dear old Subzero.
