    I was out and about earlier. The Hills shop in Woolton Village in Liverpool looked almost empty at 11am.

    Maybe a few more people will drift in as race time approaches but not so long ago, that shop would have been heaving on Grand National morning.

    The shops are finished. Even once or twice a year punters are betting online now.

    It was starting over a decade ago just before I moved on from the shops. Even in the five or so years I was there, National day went from hours of non stop bets and queues out of the door to a much more sedate affair. Just another Saturday now by the sounds of it.
