I hope all those who doubted Timmy Murphy’s ability on a front runner (Denman thread) saw The Scottish Champion Hurdle today
April 17, 2010 at 14:46 #290812If I threw a thousand darts at a board, I’d probably hit the bullseye!
The horse is a front runner. He had a most willing partner today who appeared to still be ahead of the handicapper. I’d credit the trainer and horse before Murphy. Nice steering.
April 17, 2010 at 14:58 #290816Murphy wasn’t too bad when always prominent on Merigo either. He got that one jumping immaculately.
Truth is he remains in the upper tier of NH jockeys, hindered by his retainer David Johnson not buying horses during the recession.

If he couldn’t ride a front-runner he wouldn’t be a jockey.
April 17, 2010 at 17:51 #290848Overturn will be even better once he starts to hurdle properly. He loses ground at his flights and has done in all his wins, but he’s got so much natural speed that it doesn’t make any difference.
April 17, 2010 at 19:46 #290865Surely it must make some difference, otherwise how would he improve if he starts jumping better.
The reason he can get away with some sloppy jumping is his basic ability, he remains lagged in on the very best of his Flat efforts and is with an evern better trainer now.
April 17, 2010 at 21:03 #290885If ever a race was ridiculously named its the "Scottish Champion hurdle"(Handicap) and todays winner was just that!

Yes I didn’t really make my meaning clear and I should have qualified that by saying "in the races he has contested".

April 17, 2010 at 23:30 #290905A very under used jockey in my opinion.
Bad jockeys don’t ride over a 1000 winners.
Thought his effort on Ashkazar was even better than Overturn.April 18, 2010 at 12:22 #290958They want to make up there mind how mant Scottish Champion Hurdles they have! Carlito Brigante won another so named at Musslebrugh in February but I dont think it was a handicap.

Oh sorry it was there Triumph!
April 18, 2010 at 12:44 #290962One win doesn’t make you great and one loss doesn’t make you poor. Murphy is a very good jockey. His style has become more about relaxing horses but that doesn’t mean that’s all he can do. Like Spencer and Hughes, because that’s how they ride best, they end up on a lot more hold up horses. But I’ve seen all 3 ride from the front and win, just as I’ve seen great "clock" jockeys or guys who supposedly ride brilliantly from the front win with hold up horses.
April 18, 2010 at 13:16 #290972Thought it was really interesting that Merigo was only his 51st winner of the season. Either he needs a new agent, or he’s lacking in motivation. Having listened to him before he rode a horse of ours this season, I suspect firmly it’s the latter.

I recently read his book (written 3 or so years ago admittedly) and even there you can see that being evident. He seems happy riding the Johnson horses and when he can for his in laws plus the odd outside ride, but I guess at 35, with a relatively new wife and family, he’s at that winding down stage of his career.
April 19, 2010 at 13:05 #291161Not read his book, but is there any inference in it that he’s marking time to an extent now before embarking on a training career? I’ve genuinely no idea whether it’s part of the life plan short- to mid-term to take over at Andrew Parker’s, for example – anyone?

He certainly doesn’t rule out training horses, obviously he’s always been about them and he talks a lot about having his own ideas about how he’d do it etc. I think he’d find the whole getting and entertaining owners difficult, but with he in-laws behind him, then you could see him training a smallish string of theirs plus any other owners he got on well with in the past.
Does Parker actually train out of a Raymond Green owned yard? It would be hard on him to lose his job though, just to give Murphy a leg up.April 19, 2010 at 13:21 #291166Oh sure, I wasn’t thinking in terms of Andrew Parker being usurped – it was more thinking out loud as to how long Parker himself is actually thinking of remaining in situ.
Alternatively, maybe a training partnership involving the two could be practicable – Murphy continues to input his horsemanship expertise into the yard, only more dedicatedly so than hitherto, but at the same time doing less of the touchy-feely owner-charming stuff than Parker.
