Having regularly heard stories about animals improving etc my thoughts turned to horses whose form has deteriorated.
    Can anyone suggest noteable examples.
One that springs to mind is Transfixed. Running off 82 less than a year ago it has most recently been unplaced off 54.
    Look forward to your views

    Coggy according to the handicapper

    Madison du Berlais

has deteriorated from a consistent high of 169 when he beat the likes of Exotic Dancer in a Grade 1 race to a current mark of 157,he is set to carry 10-1 lb in the Hennessey and if he is going to win a race this season he wont get in so lightly again!

    Agreed guys
Bad news TAPK. I am on Madison du Berlais at 20s for the Hennessey. Being the bringer of bad luck to many an equine over the years when bearing the burden of my stake / jinx, I would therefore advise caution. Lol

Horses deteriorate all the time for a multitude of reasons. Transfixed was relatively forward as a 2yo and was heavily raced in 2009, she hasn’t been able to physically carry on any improvement and so found herself falling down the handicap as her ability or lack of was fully exposed later in her career.

It’s important not to be too romantic when you see horses that are regressing until their is a significant factor or some encouragement from recent performances that they can exploit the generosity of the handicapper.

Lowther would be a fair example today, he looked like he had lost all knowledge of how to race on the turf this season but showed encouragement last time out on the polytrack to suggest he might be able to get back on track, I would expect him to progress to mid 90’s on the AW this winter now.

If you see a Barney Curley horse regressing, that significant factor will be the betting.

    10/12 5½L, Aviso[11/1]9-2
    10/11 26L, Maccool[10/1]9-9
    10/12 38L, Abydos[15/2]8-13
    12/12 56L, Kassiodor[11/2]9-3
    10/10 108L, Sommersturm[8/1]10-6
    9/16 64L, Agapanthus[25/1]10-12
    7/16 23L, Me Fein[66/1]10-12

Look’s like Barney’s got a few in the pipeline! 0-45 classified at Kempton for Abydos I expect!

Has Mastermindeds rating dropped significantly? Surely it must of? What website gives ratings on all National Hunt horses in Ireland and the UK?

Can’t help with Irish ratings but BHA figures can be found here.

Master Minded now 173. Think he was 186 at his peak with them. Whether he actually ran to that at any stage is a moot point.

Cheers mate, and I agree 100% with you, I think too many people got carried away with one visually stunning performance.

I was reminded of this one when checking the record of his sire prior to the recent sales.

Spirit Of Love won the Cesarewitch by nine lengths as a 3-y-old and started the following season rated 108.

His racing carer ended sadly with a fatal fall in a novice hurdle at Market Rasen as a 7-y-old, by which time his flat mark had fallen to 49.

Opposite of an improver I’d have thought would of been a decliner?

Maybe the thread should of said, how to spot genuine decline from a pre-planed one?

Although he ran a cracker today, wouldnt Tidal Bay still fall into this category? Or is there a category called ‘Complete and Utter Rogue Who Has Loads of Ability, But Only Puts It In When It Suits Him’??!!!!
