Marb,
Doesn’t that suggest that problem isn’t the trainer, but the horses he’s been given to train for JP?
(I think this might be deja vu, again)

Could it be that the problem is with the people who are buying his horses ? I would assume he would be as loyal to them as he would his major trainers ? Istabraq aside how many of his other trainers have managed to win JP a Gold Cup or Champion Hurdle or Champion Chase. In fact how many have even been placed that haven’t been bought as proven performers. Off the top of my head I can’t think of any !
November 13, 2008 at 18:58 #189573Marble – very poor run in a graduation chase followed by a big big run in a big handicap, as they say on the Betfair Forum "has this happened before?" – watch out for Alberta’s in the Hennessy, similar profile to that of Exotic Dancer pre-Paddy Power Gold Cup.
November 13, 2008 at 20:51 #189588Though I would ask, if he could improve these horses why couldn’t he do it with more of JP’s given a random distribution would show that JP has the most horses in the yard and therefore he should have had at least a few more that Jonjo could bring out the best in?.
It’s a straightforward task for any trainer worthy of the title to prepare and campaign a good horse, and I rather doubt Jonjo had to weave any magic spell to "improve" those non-JP owned horses you mention; they’ve shown no more than the improvement expected in the young and promising IMO
What the O’Neill yard seem unable to do is understand, settle, comfort and get the best out of the moderate horse of dubious temperament and/or limited jumping ability, traits common in JP’s unhappy herd.
As such Jonjo doesn’t rate very highly in the training ranks with me, and I’m confident the likes of Evan Williams, Peter Bowen, Alison Thorpe and Richard Lee would make a better fist of things given the opportunity to work on some ex-Jonjo JP dodgepots.
As for 200+ winners over the last two years, does anyone other than Pipe send out so many runners?
From a betting point of view I find the Jonjo/JP/AP underlays a godsend, making many a market
November 14, 2008 at 02:33 #189645The Jonjo O’Neill stable must rank as jump racings answer to Godolphin its a stable with plenty of money invested in it but nothing in the way of results. If JP wants horses to compete with Paul Nicholls he should ditch Jonjo and consider trying to persuade Aidan O’Brien to train jumpers again like he did with Istabraq. Maybe a financial incentive from Mcmanus may be enough. I love to see Aidan O’Brien to staddle horses at Cheltenham and Aintree. I was a bit disapointed to hear in this mornings racing post that Hebridean is going to be trained over hurdles by Paul Nicholls. I love to see a succesful JP McManus, Aidan O’Brien, Tony McCoy partnership at a future cheltenham festival.
November 15, 2008 at 22:06 #189950What a bummer for Tony McCoy. He chooses a David Pipe JP McManus runner in the last race at Cheltenham only to see the Jonjo runner hose home!! The David Pipe horses have been running like drays for quite a while now, the odd winner apart. I wouldn’t touch any of his runners with a barge pole even without Tom Scudamore riding!!! All of his runners tailed off today. Hard to weigh up either stable.
November 15, 2008 at 22:17 #189955Well done Jonjo and JP!
