Just been taking a look at the recent form of Jonjo O’Neill’s stable and, whilst admittedly he’s had a number of runners at long prices, it is pretty appalling. It must gut AP to be stuck with such dross.
November 12, 2008 at 17:21 #189376Yes, being a retained jockey to one of the sport’s biggest owners, winning the champion jockey title every year plus over one and a half million pounds of prize money each season must sicken him no end.
November 12, 2008 at 17:36 #189378And The Juicy Retainer he has with JP must just be the nail in t he coffin!! Where can he turn?
November 12, 2008 at 18:10 #189389…and if he can coax a win out of the likes of the apparently unwilling Cooldine Lad as he did at Carlisle, then McCoy won’t be short of winners in the near future.
November 12, 2008 at 19:24 #189408Certain sense of deja vu about this thread
I said certain sense of deja vu about this thread…November 12, 2008 at 19:58 #189420A truely awesome sportsman by any standard but my overriding image of McCoy these days is frequent backwards rowing in golden hoops round the gaffs. I dont believe for a second the huge retainer takes the pain away on the big Winter Saturdays.
JJ seems like a great bloke and one you’d always want to see do well but McManus has all his good horses elsewhere…..maybe he knows something.

I said certain sense of deja vu about this thread…not again?
November 12, 2008 at 20:39 #189431Compared to Ferdy Murphy and Henrietta Knight, Jonjo is having a golden run …..
(Just wanted to maintain the traditions of the Jonjo threads and I believe that mentioning the above pair is obligatory)
Realistically, with Nicholls, King and Henderson winning about 99% of the available novice races, trainers without a few well handicapped horses for the 0-125 and below races are all struggling.
November 13, 2008 at 01:00 #189454Concur with the point made by AP about the lack of stength in depth in NH racing with Nicholls dominant, followed by the likes of King, Hobbs and Henderson
Bookies give prices about the number of winners Nicholls has every Saturday (7 last week!).
McCoy could have stayed with Pipe- another yard hardly flyingNovember 13, 2008 at 01:06 #189455Concur with the point made by AP about the lack of stength in depth in NH racing with Nicholls dominant, followed by the likes of King, Hobbs and Henderson

McCoy could have stayed with Pipe- another yard hardly flyingYeah, but their dominant for a reason and JJ certainly cant use lack of resources as an excuse.
November 13, 2008 at 03:11 #189487I’m beginning to wonder if there’s something in the theory AP advanced last year about Jackdaw’s Castle not being the healthiest place for horses.
As has been said, JP has the resources and the lack of success is striking in the past few years.November 13, 2008 at 03:55 #189490Ap’s theory is interesting. but why did David Nicholson do so well there then,
November 13, 2008 at 04:20 #189495I just hope everything gets the all clear at Jonjo"s being a big fan of Albertas run , Exotic dancer, and Wichita lineman! Having said that Exotic never ran to his ability after the Betfair ( handicapper take note! Why Exotic had to give Knowhere 18 lb in the roan chase having won nothing last year and Knowhere beats Our Vic who had beaten Exotic in the King George is a joke) Wichita never ran to his ability all last season and yet Albertas ran well all season! But ran a shocker 1st time out! Weird!
November 13, 2008 at 04:20 #189496AP had an answer to that, I just can’t remember it- something to do with how long the horses had been there- that it was ok for a few years then not….

I’d agree, as a big AP fan, there is nothing more dispiriting when the big races come round and he’s on a ‘no-hoper’. Apart from 2007 at Cheltenham when he had 3 wins, most of the time he’s been lucky to get 1 winner.
Nicholls/Walsh – King/Thornton seem to clean up in the majority of races. Much as I like JJ – something isn’t right – maybe that’s why JP has sent more horses elsewere.November 13, 2008 at 13:25 #189526The suggestion was that when you build a brand new stable, it’s free of any disease problems.
The issue with the land on which Jackdaws Castle is located, as told to ne by a long term local, is that because it’s low lying and prone to being cold and damp in the winter, is that once there’s a problem, it’s hard to eradicate.
I saw a similar pattern with a new yard just outside Swindon 20 years ago, when Stan Mellor took over a farm that had never been used for horses and built new barns. The first season was brilliant, with over 30 winners, the second not so good, the third ………
After four years, Stan was living mainly on the set aside money for taking farm land out of production!
To be fair to Jonjo, his record is clearly very good – in the last two full seasons he’s had 232 winners and earned £2.7M in prize money. But there has been a slump each year around this time, Nov/Dec, that seems to coincide with the arrival of wet and cold weather.
November 13, 2008 at 16:07 #189546I’m sure I heard JP saying one time that he’d had his life savings on Dawn Run – well the jist of it is he really really owes Jonjo. He’ll always have horses there – even if it’s only 7 or 8.
