According to the Graun’s live feed ealier this afternoon a report emanating from the Telegraph suggests Johnson is trying to heal the rift with Sunak, in order that he (Johnson) is offered the position of Home Secretary under a Sunak premiership , as he’s the right man ‘to sort out the illegal immigration problem’
Make of that what you will

Mordaunt 18The latter is the only declared runner, but still seems nowhere near the 100 nominations required.
I’m fairly sure that if Johnson gets the 100 assurances he will run and if those translate into 100 nominations he would beat Mordaunt – even if she too made it to an MPs’ vote – and Johnson would then be odds-on to win with the Members.
I get that Johnson won an Election for them, but he’s been discredited since, they were behind in the polls (though not as much) just before he went the first time, he’s got an inquiry hanging over him and to me it would be insanity to re-elect him.
But then it was insanity to elect Truss.
Anything’s possible, it seems.

The big grey suit Hague stuffed him, and the opinion polls. Yes he’s lying about his numbers but he has to – he’s in a corner.

Sunak for best chance of stability thru next 12 months for GB.
Next GE will be decided on much bigger issues than Who is leader, quite frankly.
Mortgage rates plus inflation will decide next government, not a leader or personality.

Doesn’t stop him lying about it of course. A leopard never changes its spots. As I said before I think he’s just enjoying the attention. Perhaps he even never intended to run.
Reckon he’s doing a ‘deal’ with Sunak to save face, could even be decided on Monday. #PM4PM clearly has no chance.
I don’t like Sunak, I don’t like Hunt but out of an absolutely terrible bunch, they are the best we have.

THIS.^
Both are more right wing than they are depicted, but all is relative and I noticed that every time Johnson shortened in the betting last week it had the exact opposite impact on the financial markets.
The markets want Sunak/Hunt and they definitely don’t want Johnson, who could, even in these dire straits, even sack Hunt and replace him with one of his cronies.
The whole country should be wanting Sunak to win it right now if only to get us through the winter.

October 23, 2022 at 09:37 #1619693While dodging his errors with qualitative easing after the financial crash in the noughties, ex-BoE governor Melvyn King saying a few things I’ve believed for ages.
– Supporting Ukraine and standing up to and sanctioning Russia means more than blue and yellow flags in gardens and windows and emoticons on social media, it means accepting lower standards of living that accompany sanctions.
– You can’t have European-level standards of public services and USA-level rates of taxation. It’s time to choose one or the other.
And simply taxing the rich or even big companies won’t fix it – there aren’t enough of either to fund the gap.
For sure, there are moral reasons for higher top rates and windfall taxes, but the basic rate for all needs to go up too – that’s what really raises the big money.
It’s time for the UK population to grow up and decide what it wants because it can’t have lower taxes, better public services and support Ukraine.

October 23, 2022 at 10:13 #1619699Ian you make some good points in your latest post

I’d go one step further and reduce the personal tax allowance threshold back down to the c£11k mark, and secondly increase minimum working hours to 24 hours/week before you can claim any in-work benefits.
There are always efficiency savings to be made in any big spending department across all. Take your local councils, for example:
Council tax- 25% to 30% of your council tax payment goes towards paying for council employee pensions. Not towards services, but to supporting pension schemes, with no risk, because the taxpayer bails them out if they have a funding shortfall.October 23, 2022 at 10:21 #1619702‘25% to 30% of your council tax payment goes towards paying for council employee pensions.’
Is there a source for that figure please?
