Slight recovery for the government in the betting – maybe Hunt’s arrival, the noises he is making and the mounting probability that Truss is toast.
Most Seats
Labour 1.42
Tories 3.2Overall Majority
Labour 2.06
No Overall Majority 2.68
Tories 6.4Still grim reading for the government, but not as bad as it has been.
Agree with CAS – a world where interest rates are higher than inflation rates is the only world that makes economic sense to me….that ceased to be the case in the 1970s and was only arrested by 80s monetarism and it ceased to be the case circa 2008 when all this qualitative easing (a pretentious way of saying crudely printing money) nonsense started.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"October 16, 2022 at 11:08 #1618744The Tories are out this morning with the hard hats on trying to sound positive ….they,ve tried this before with a much easy selling Boris , Truss is toast , matter of when not if , be interesting to see what the markets make of what Hunt has said ….hopefully we,ll see some stability but I’m not convinced
October 16, 2022 at 11:46 #1618750Hunt is ‘insisting’ that Truss is still in charge. When the media is using that sort of language it’s only a matter of time.
October 16, 2022 at 11:55 #1618753I agree.
When local radio tore into Truss many asked why national media don’t do this.
Fear of loss of access was rightly stated as the reason.
Well. Beth Rigby didn’t sound too worried about losing access to Liz Truss when calling out: “You’re out of your depth” when Truss exited that press conference.
Rigby is now certain Truss is a goner and, while Rigby, like Andrew Neil, is tougher than most, once you see the entire media pack going for the jugular you know the game is up.
I’d say it’s fifty-fifty as to whether Truss makes it to PMQs this Wednesday.
Market reaction on Monday may determine her short-term fate – her medium- and long-term fate are already a foregone conclusion.

New leader will be elected solely by the MPs; no involvement of the wider Tory membership.
The various factions within the Tory MPs will carry on squabbling. All this talk of a Unity candidate, like Ben Wallace will not make a jot of difference to their GE chances if public infighting carries on, plus the public’s finances continue to be stretched.
The narrative is already set in stone for the next GE.And i suspect Starmer’s list of pledges made at the Labour party conference will, in reality, have to be severely curtailed due to Treasury revenues, come the next GE.
October 16, 2022 at 12:43 #1618768While the Tory Membership has collectively done a more than passable impression of a bunch of Daily Mail-reading brain donors by electing Truss, I’m not sure even the most deferential among them will react well to their elected choice being knifed and a replacement installed they had no say over.
I wonder how many of them will be in the mood to go out knocking on doors etc come the next Election?
I foresee a prolonged period of trouble for the Tories, but there was talk of the Party being finished after 1997 and 2001 but Labour failed to check/quite ensure there wasn’t still a pulse and the Tories recovered.
Starmer won’t be able to do what he wants to do because he will inherit a mess, but he can hardly be blamed for that.
I just hope he will be a moderate PM with a meaningful sense of social justice.
I think Great British Energy is a good idea.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"October 16, 2022 at 12:51 #1618770The problem is if the MPs do finish her and then elect a new leader without the party faithful it’s just going to make the election calls even stronger …already 1 Tory playing the woe is me as an MP card this morning , saying you have no idea the anger and hate he gets ….what’s he expecting , chin chin and back slaps
October 16, 2022 at 12:55 #1618772“I think Great British Energy is a good idea.”
On paper and in the conference hall, Ian.
I’m struggling to see how a new Labour government can implement this as 50% of UK gas is imported. By my back of ciggie packet calcs, roughly 30% of our energy needs is imported.
This situ will take time to turn around. Until the new nuclear power stations are complete (Tory ‘built’, by the way) and more wind renewable is on the table we’ll be c10 years off his promise i suspect.
And, taxpayers, will ultimately being the ones financing Great British Energy.October 16, 2022 at 13:39 #1618783An anonymous source from Truss’s dwindling camp has told the press: “This is a vendetta driven by former public schoolboys who can’t get over the fact that they were beaten by a woman’”.
It really is pathetic to play the “I am only a poor little woman” card.
October 16, 2022 at 14:47 #1618790‘And, taxpayers, will ultimately being the ones financing Great British Energy.’
Taxpayers are already financing the dozens of failed energy ‘companies’ and the remaining ones through the price guarantee so no change there.
October 16, 2022 at 18:30 #1618808Is anyone watching Hancock on the Andrew Neil show … , this idiot is why the Tories will be out for a generation , he hasn’t a clue
October 16, 2022 at 19:30 #1618812‘The country has no appetite for a Labour Government’ at which Neil pointed out how far ahead Labour were in the polls. It’s interesting to see which MP’s are being wheeled out to defend the government. For ages now they’ve reminded me of those wildlife documentaries about penguins where they all shuffle around on the ice flow because they know the first one that dives into the water will be gobbled up.
October 16, 2022 at 19:50 #1618813Ed balls and Osbourne seemed to be enjoying themselves …both thankful to be out of the snakepit
October 16, 2022 at 21:18 #1618816Rishi Sunak now 2.58 favourite to be next PM.
He’s been very quiet lately, but the Betfair market is often ahead of the media so I’m expecting him to emerge in the next week or two, probably once Truss has gone.
He won’t make the mistake of being “he who wields the knife….” a second time.

October 16, 2022 at 22:11 #1618819Larry scandalously not quoted – give it time.
Next PM
Rishi Sunak 2.58
Jeremy Hunt 6
Ben Wallace 6
Keir Starmer 9
Penny Mordaunt 11
Boris Johnson 27I am "The Horse Racing Punter" on Facebook
