Is there a definitive calculation for adding an amount of time to a race where obstacles have been omitted. I assume the racing post just reports the actual time from start to finish and doesn’t make an allowance for the fact that less obstacles have been jumped. Would the factors to consider include time taken to jump (ground factor included ??),extra effort required to jump and maybe an average allowance to cater for any potential mistakes ?

I wouldn’t have thought so. I’d be more concerned with the moving of running rails etc which can affect the distance more than omitted fences IMO.

I think aaronizneez makes a fair point and I’d suggest that the times published in the Racing Post do not make allowances for ommitted fences.

The race won by Swings N Strings at Uttoxeter, for instance, shows a winning time only 1.2s slower than standard. Bearing in mind the winner was rated only 86, there’s obviously a discrepancy, and it could prove misleading (assuming of course you didn’t notice the note at the top of the page saying x obstacles had been ommitted).

Missed out fences and the dolling out of rails are the 2 main reasons why I think jumps timefigures across the spectrum are completely pointless.
