Afternoon all.
I have no mention in any of my fathers scrapbooks or photos of a Double Limit. That looks a fine effort with the Reckless Phillip rider ap.
Tim Jarvis is the Kamir rider for sure.
What about Tommy Carmody in the first photo? The horse is called Danhagen and T. Carmody did ride him when he finished a sensational 2nd in the County Hurdle.
September 20, 2015 at 17:16 #1207665Warwick Dec 30th, 1980, Danhagen won Div 2 of the Bob Cratchit Novices Hurdle, last race on the card, offering total prize money of £500. Under a 7lb penalty for a previous win, he scored as the 8/11 fav, ridden by T Carmody, trained by A Jarvis.
September 20, 2015 at 20:06 #1207673Excellent, thank you.
Could I just bore you for one more bit of Danhagen form from that season?
I have found a nice photo with no details on the back from (looks like) Stratford winners enclosure. There are some ladies with Panama badges on their coats, and a lady handing over a bottle of wine. Could you please check if Danhagen won a race sponsored by Panama? Thanks in advance.
September 21, 2015 at 07:32 #1207734I can’t access the card as the race was on a Saturday, but the results in the Monday edition show that Danhagen won a race at Stratford on Feb 7th, 1981 and that fits with the pattern of his runs as outlined in Timeform. They report he won twice at Stratford, the second in a handicap in February – that must have been on Sat Feb 28th in order to fit in before the County Hurdle. He was 6/5 on fav for the Feb 7th win and 7/1 for the Feb 28th win.
He also ran in the Panama Cigar Final at Chepstow on Easter Monday, April 20th, finishing 4th – the winner was the Irish trained Passing Parade, who had finished one place behind Danhagen in the County Hurdle. The Irish horse was having his second race in two days at Cheltenham, having finished third in the Sun Alliance Hurdle the previous afternoon behind Gaye Chance.
September 21, 2015 at 10:33 #1207783I’ve got complete Chaseform/Raceform Up to Date Annuals for seasons 79/80 through to 84/85 if they would be of any help.
September 21, 2015 at 10:42 #1207784That first race at Stratford was definitely a Panama cigar Hurdle qualifier, ridden by P Scudamore
September 21, 2015 at 11:24 #1207785John Burke rode Reckless Philip throughout 81/82 season when he ran 6 times, winning on his last two starts at Huntingdon and Uttoxeter. He ran twice at Nottingham that season. 20/2/82 a Saturday, he ran third, and was unplaced on 7/12/81.
The horse then ran 12 times during 82/83,three times at Nottingham. He finished second under Graham Bradley, Fell when ridden by John Francome, and then third under our friend John Burke, on 22/3/83.So if that’s Reckless Philip, at Nottingham in 1982 then it’s John Burke! And even if it’s 83 it’s sure as heck neither Francome nor Bradley

_______________________________________Trickmeister, thanks for nailing down the Reckless Phillip rider and other details.
It is very much appreciated.I would never have got these finer details without the help on here.
September 22, 2015 at 07:04 #1207906I’ve found the Ayr race, it was on Weds Dec 3rd, 1980 and he was 6/4 fav ridden by Carmody.
And the Nottingham win was on Tues Jan 27th, 1981, in a 2M handicap hurdle where he carried top weight of 11-3, again with Carmody riding. Can’t tell you the SP as the relevant page for the 28th is missing.
Finally, the date of the Panama Cigar final was April 20th, Easter Monday.
Eleven runs between Dec 3rd and April 20th – not the sort of program you see many horses trying these days.
September 22, 2015 at 10:50 #1207991Going off at a slight tangent, we used to pronounce TC’s surname as CARmody. He was interviewed once by the unfortunate Tony Gubba, who used to get the backwater gigs, and knew little about racing. I think this was at Haydock after a Night Nurse/Silver Buck clash. Gubba stood between Carmody and Ian Watkinson (Night Nurse) awaiting his cue, when it came, Gubba did his intro but you could tell he was already nervous:
‘Here are the two jockeys who featured in that great finish, Tommy Carmody and Ian Watkinson. Let’s get their thoughts. We turn first to Ian Watkinson,’ and he raised the Mic to the little fella who said, understandably, ‘I’m Tommy CarMODY.’
Gubba learnt to do his homework, and I learnt how to pronounce Carmody’s name (he was a fine jockey, BTW).
