Truly the end of an era with the passing of the wonderful Old Vic after a bout of colic at the age of 25. RIP lad – an amazing career as a flat horse and then sire of jumpers. Your genes will live on….
He became better known for being a great National Hunt sire. To me though I’ll always have great memories of his French & Irish Derby victories. He was a top class racehorse in 1989, it’s shame he and Nashwan never competed against one another that year.
I only saw Old Vic in the flesh once, at Sandown on Whitbread day. He was a smashing colt- strong, deep-bodied and with a very intelligent head. He had that air of nobility about him which all the best horses have. In my opinion, he was up with the very best middle-distance performers I’ve seen: his ability to not only maintain a strong gallop but also quicken from the front made him a formidable opponent. In fact, there isn’t a horse I’ve seen in my thirty-odd years of watching racing which I’d have backed against him over a mile and a half on good-to-soft or softer.
