I have about 15 months of consecutive racing posts from 1st June 06
They are in my garage but im moving soon and the missus doesnt want them coming with us!
I had grand plans when i started storing them but as it is, i realised i wouldnt have the time to do what i wanted and i found a site that does it for me anyway!
But should i just bin them, give them away or stick them on ebay/local paper and get a few bob for them? Is there a demand?
I only ask cause i worked out the cost i spent on them and it made me rather angry!! Would like to get something back but what do you guys reckon. Obviously would need someone to collect them as well!
Any advice appreciated!!

February 15, 2008 at 11:24 #143431I’m a hoarder and have kept Racing Posts going back years [only Cheltenham Festival ones], I’ve also got Observer Magazines going back years because I had a plan to do collages of different years, just havn’t got round to it yet. I was once told of a chap who had died and his garden shed was full of newspaper cuttings of racing going back to the 1920’s; his family burnt the lot, I would have given anything to have seen it….just imagine Golden Miller etc….
February 15, 2008 at 11:27 #143435I have about 2 years worth of racing posts in my cellar. They have gone a bit damp so the burning them option is not possible for me.
I think I may have to start dumping them 10 at a time in the recycling bin to get shot of them.
The only good thing in the paper copy of the racing post is that it tells you a trainers record with his handicap debutants. The rest of the information and more is freely available on line.
February 15, 2008 at 12:28 #143458get rid of them then i guess!! think i like the wino option best! give a bit back to the community!

thanks for comments
February 15, 2008 at 13:02 #143464I would encourage this action because
on a more serious note,
if the posts were wooden, it would not matter,
but if the garage is attached to the house
you would do well to inform your insurance company
that you are storing a large quantity of unusual flammable material.
Not only is there a fire risk but also of a tramp taking up residence.
I know a case where this happened.
The insurance may well want to re-assess their risk
and best also let the mortgage company know
of the free garage rental .February 15, 2008 at 13:06 #143466Recycle papers and recycle Tramp
February 15, 2008 at 13:44 #143487I think their ubiquity and relative youth will mean that the likeliest takers of the papers, such as the British Library Document Supply Centre, is unlikely to require them, except maybe to fill the odd gap where a day’s copy has been mislaid or pilfered. Ditto somewhere like the British Horseracing Museum.
That’s assuming, of course, that these bodies haven’t already had the lot stuck onto microfilm for posterity long since.
So yes, I think recycling seems the likeliest option all in all.
I’ve kept part or all of most of the Sportsman papers ever published; partly for portfolio purposes, but mostly as a lasting reminder of the best nine months of my working life to date. Heady days….

February 15, 2008 at 13:52 #143490One thread on here a few weeks after the paper’s demise highlighted that a first edition failed to meet its 99p reserve on eBay, so I veeeeeeeery much doubt it. I only got buttons when I sold a first edition of the Today paper as well not so long before that. Meanies!

Drat – I have the “first edition” of every new national newspaper published in the last 40 years – just in case they may be worth something someday. Who remembers The European?
February 15, 2008 at 14:07 #143504I do – I’ve got one of those as well.
I don’t think they’re all equally worthless – I got the only ever copy of MXPress, a rival to the NME that lasted one week in June 1992, and I believe that’s worth a few bob.

February 15, 2008 at 14:22 #143515You should have done a " I was so impressed….., i bought the company" Jeremy
We may have had a racing industry paper actually worth paying for
February 15, 2008 at 16:45 #143580Hihihihihi, a nice thought, Charlie – what a shame the paper’s debts were the "How much?!?!?" side of crippling by its end!
