when racing does anyone buy the official racecard? at the top tracks like ascot and cheltenham i think they are worth buying but others at the likes of chepstow are a waste of money.
also does anyone on here think its worth paying £6 for a timeform racecard when at the races?

I can’t claim to have ever purchased a Timeform racecard (just another thing to carry around), but the sourcing of a racecourse racecard is always my first port of call. In all honesty I’m throwing my money away, as there is little to be gained from its ownership with a copy of the Racing Post tucked neatly into my pocket, but it’s a souvenir.

They all end up in the same cupboard when I get home, but it’s nice to have them nonetheless.

We had the ordinance survey type racecards at Sedgy on Boxing Day which have also been used at Kempton, although I would imagine they had proper racecards for the King George meet.

Not sure how much they charge for these cards as we get them free as owners but I wouldn’t want to be paying anymore than a pound for them.

Of course the general standard of racecards is much better than when I started going racing in the late 80’s although they are still in black & white only at Wolves.
I tend to buy them more as a memento of a days racing rather than for form study so therefore the Timeform racecards for me would be a waste of money.

I think Timeorm Racecards have only gone up in price about 1 pound in 20 years or so. Remember when the RP was 25p?

I usually buy a racecard, partly as a memento but mainly because they are rigid and of a handy size so making them an ideal ‘clipboard’ to note jockeys’ colours, transfer tissues, make notes and record bets. The bumf that pads them out is of no interest to me but to the recreational racegoer they provide a little help and add interest to the day, just so long as they ignore the woeful betting forecasts.

The card was free at Musselburgh’s Sunday meet a couple of weeks ago. Dunno if this was a one-off

    Equitrack I’m with you 100%

I love looking back at them and seeing that I saw a Grand National winner in a novice hurdle at Bangor etc etc.

I love buying my racecards! I have them in my bedroom nicely displayed and you can see the ones with the damp pages when it was raining :P. The worst racecard I have brought was on December the 1st at Kempton 2007 when Dansant won, its just a piece of printed off paper folded, not even a booklet!.

I’ve kept all my point-to-point racecards – some interesting participants such as Grand National winner to be, Ben Nevis winning the Ladies Open at the Cheshire Forest!!

I usually buy one at Lingfield just for the tote vouchers as the free bet is more than the card costs and they are easier to carry around than a paper.

I wouldn’t buy a timeform card at the races as I’ve usually done my studyng by the time I get there.

I use Timeform Racecards but find the best thing to do is to download them online. That way you have time to study properly – I don’t think I’d have enough time to get full value out of them if I bought on course.

Ten Plus – interesting recollection of Ben Nevis. Was that in the days when the Cheshire Forest raced at Tatton Park?

I always buy the racecard when I go racing, and have one for every meeting I’ve been to bar a couple when I was a youngster. For me it’s like a football programme as a permanent record of attendance. Collection is stored in filing boxes in data order.

The racecard provides me with an easy reference when checking horses in the paddock and learning colours.

The free racecard at Musselburgh is not a one off, the racecard is complimentary for all meetings, and I wish more racecourses would follow their example. For £13 advance booking for last Monday we got admission, a free racecard, seven horse races and six races in the New Year Sprint.

Best racecard layout in my area is Hamilton. All runners for each race on facing pages so that you don’t have to turn the page. Plenty of background reading as well.

Racecards are included in the admission price at Plumpton also.

No – before Tatton – Ben Nevis won at Littleton, just outside Chester.

Ayr on Ayr Gold Cup Day had free racecards for all enclosures and indeed Musselburgh do give them to you for free upon entry.

Haydock now charge £3 on racedays where as at Ludlow it included with your admission and is full colour.

When i did Leicester a few years ago they were Black and White which in this day and age is diabolical.

Thanks Ten Plus – I hadn’t discovered point-to-points in the days of Littleton. Don’t live up in the north-west any more, but still try to make it back for the odd point-to-point and have fond memories in particular of Alpraham (go racing there is like going back 80 years) and the unmatchable Flagg Moor.

You are correct – Flagg is quite unique!!! and should be visited at least once in a lifetime!!!!

Glad to see Rob’s posting as I thought I was the only one to keep every racecard from every meeting I have been to.

Keeping them all it is interesting to see how they have improved over the years. All my early ones are black and white.

The standard of racecards is still very hit and miss and I agree there is no place or excuse for not having colour cards – Leicester and Wolverhampton are the only current culprits that spring to mind, although Leicester do go colour at their feature meetings. Although (and I am happy to be corrected on this one) I believe the Leicester b&w cards are free.

I quite like the cards that also have editorial in as well – giving something to read in the quieter moments. There is one – Ayr if I remember correctly – which has a very good "welcome message" inside teh cover. Instead of the usual, often boring, "welcome to the course" and "thanks to our sponsors" stuff it can contain some controversial comment – most refreshing.
