Sorry for such a pathetic question, but what do the numbers mean to the left of a horse’s name in a RP racecard? Not the form figures, the smaller ones which appear at the beginning of the name. Thanks in advance.
November 19, 2008 at 02:15 #190535Days since last run. A J for jumps or F for flat is added if last run was under a different code.
November 19, 2008 at 02:16 #190536The numbers show the sequence in which horses will be eliminated from the race if the number of declarations exceed the maximum permitted field size.
So if the safety limit is 14 and the number of entries is 25, there will be horses with elimination numbers from 1 to 11.
The lowest numbers are eliminated first, so number 1 would be the first to go, then number 2 and so on until the number of runners is reduced to the allowed maximum.
The elimination sequence is based on weights in a handicap, lowest weight goes first – in a maiden the number 1 goes to the horse with the most previous unplaced runs.
They are published so that trainers can estimate their chances of getting a run.

November 19, 2008 at 02:49 #190549The weight for age scale can work against you in handicaps with ballot marks as we saw with R De Rien Sivola on Saturday.
On ratings would comfortably have got in the novice hcap but because of weight for age ended up with no chance of getting in.
Still connections won’t have been too bothered as he ended up finishing a good second in the juvenile hurdle.Of course you can have the scenario in maiden where a 100 rated horse having had three runs can be balloted by a horse that has two runs, been beaten 20 lengths plus and shown nothing because the hcapper hasn’t had chance to give the horse a mark even thought it appears to be not up to much.
