Another day of losers, but another day where an Elliot/Russell horse saves me, and small profit in running from my pal Galvin. Next year. Mortal getting fifth was agonising, as was just missing out on my EW on Editeur earlier. No bet in Ballymore, but American Mike starting to get close to the kind of type I may start following now.

Coral Cup and Grand Annual were smaller betting races given my terrible record in them. Scaramanga was the one that got away. The plan was to lay in running, and the only thing I’ll say is don’t do that if you’re drinking. I didn’t lose much, but my reflexes were slower than usual, and I missed a very nice profit, especially turning for home.

On the plus side, Gin On Line was a loser I avoided, and I feel I know Battleoverdoyen well enough now, having been putting him up for a couple of years, and as expected, leaving him out was a wise move. Unsuitable race for him. He’ll be back.

I thought I was doing well with 22-1 for Sire Du Berlais…until I saw your post….320s…I hope you did not cash it in in running…that must be the biggest odds win you have ever had at Cheltenham?! Awesome is an over used word, but not sure it does justice to that scoop…and Dashel Drasher. I hope you are sitting down. Fantastic! Brilliant.

Thanks mate, that’s definitely the biggest, Rock On Ruby my biggest previously at 200’s.

It’s just unbelievable, and just back off the ceiling now

Don’t really know where to start. After a very humdrum two days, where theonly real highlights were those decent lays on The Goffer and Galvin, it all changed rapidly in the next 48 hours

Sire Du Berlais has been a very good horse to me, but I’ll not forget that stayers hurdle for a long time. To get 320’s was insane, and I had said, you could at least be assured that for that day alone, he’s going to be a different horse from earlier in the season. To top it off, I had Dashel Drasher 80’s EW, and I was bad enough when he was heading for home. That’s when it got a bit mental.

I thought long and hard about mentioning this, but I had the forecast too. Sire Du Berlais was my fifth biggest winner ever, and to have a forecast with that pair, I was on the ceiling.

Then came the bing bong. I thought to myself that’s good that the winners unaffected, had a look at Dashel as well, and was happy that he wouldn’t lose it. But they demoted him right enough. I was gutted even with the SDB win. Then I checked my account, and Betfair still paid out. Unbelievable, and a rollercoaster of emotions in five minutes.

Kim Muir wasn’t as heavy a betting race this year, but I still got a free race out of it thanks to Western Zara. Thought Beauport was ok, and I’m interested to see if he gets an entry for Ayr.

Pertemps was also a smaller betting race this year. All my eggs were in one basket with Thanksforthehelp, and that was another free race, laying before the off. He was a wee bit disappointing though.

Main loser on Thursday was Janidil, who was really poor. He was a bigger Antepost, and it never looked likely.

On to Friday, and already well ahead in Gold Cup thanks to Noble Yeats. Conflated ran best of mine, and took a few quid back on him in running.

The County Hurdle win meant a lot. Not just because it was a 50-1 shot, but because I’ve waited long enough for it. I knew he had it in him.

Day was topped off by Ikoro, and how he managed to get up I’ll never know.

The Stayers Hurdle alone made it my second best Cheltenham ever, and I’ll no forget that Thursday afternoon for a while.

On to Saturday, and with Time To Get Up and Captain Kangaroo in The Midlands National. Time To Get Up weighted you run if in good nick, while Captain Kangaroo has every chance if he can jump ok.

Dans Le Vent, The Ferry Master, and Band of Outlaws are hardly confident selections on recent evidence, but their prices draw me in, and all still have a race in them surely.

Quid Pro Quo and Rouge Vif at Kempton look a bit more sensible to me, but I always think that Kempton card is a strange one

A lot of selections, but after the week I had, just giving it a go

    1330 Kempton – Quid Pro Quo 17-2
    1440 Kempton – Rouge Vif 8’s
1450 Newcastle – Band of Outlaws 40’s EW
    Midlands – Captain Kangaroo 20’s EW 6pl
Midlands – Time To Get Up 33’s
    1525 Newcastle – The Ferry Master 11’s

I know you probably didn’t back him at the price, but I bet you had a smile on your face watching your wee pal Bachasson pinging the last today.

Just brilliant Grass, loved every minute of that. Can’t believe they got him back like that after two years off.

Yeah, not a penny on him, but I was nearly bending the rules in the Ten To Follow, so I could include him

Decided to have a bet tomorrow, and can’t possibly be worse than those desperate selections last Saturday. Time To Get Up and The Ferry Master both look gone. Captain Kangaroo will maybe be bet again, but I’m in no rush after that, and I really should take the money and run with him after that Cork National win.

Quid Pro Quo was a notebook horse two years back, and I doubt I’ll bet him again, though I just know I’ll try Band of Outlaws again.

The one bright spot was Dans Le Vent, who I reckon would have won but for unseating. Very interesting of he gets a Scottish National entry.

Friday selection is the admittedly unreliable Iolani. Won this two years back, and on a nice mark, but any positives will always be offset by the fact that you just can’t rely on him 100%. Just thought at the price he had to be chanced.

Just one off the places today with Iolani. Very unlucky. Except maybe for that he was beaten a country mile, and how he actually got home for fifth I’ll never know, as he looked out on his feet heading for home.

Hoping for better Saturday. Espoir De Guye I’m hopeful about, and I just hope he can finish the race off, as I fully expect him to be there. Curious Times is the other Antepost, and I’m happy with the 50’s. If he goes to 33’s with Skybet, I’ll top up to five places. Think he can be competitive off this mark, though maybe pushing it slightly for the win. Don’t think he deserved to be the outsider regardless.

Have to be with Homme Public after the win of Ikoro last week. Mentioned the Greenall/Guerriero combo a few times now. Like what they’re doing, and hoping Homme, Gesskile, Herbiers, and Iroko are just the start of it.

That trio will depend on how things go the rest of the day, but it just doesn’t look like a day to go nuts. I’d probably want one of the Anteposts to come in.

    Looking at these too…..

    Bangor – Iceman Dennis
    Curragh – Good Heavens
    Curragh – Mowgli
    Newbury – Potters Legend

I’ve bet Good Heavens before, but I’m not wanting to start wading into these big Flat Handicaps too soon. Mowgli won this race last year, but he’s not one to set your watch by. Possibly most confident about Potters Legend, while I’ve maybe seen something that isn’t there with Iceman Dennis, but been cautiously watching him. No bets on that lot, and as I said, leaving them more than likely, unless any earlier luck

Plenty of Sandy Thomson horses catching the eye at Kelso, and I just wonder if Hill Sixteen will actually win, with the expectation that this will merely be a prep for Aintree

This trio more than enough for now

    1405 Newbury – Espoir De Guye 12’s

Your boy Saltonstall just ran a very good race at the Curragh, Jerry Hannon screaming and panicking as usual when he got pipped late. I could listen to Donn McClean and Gary O’Brien chat all day, it’s just the bit in between…

Agree Grass, another desperate commentary from him, I am not a fan. I’ll leave it at that before I go on another rant about him (typed out about four, five lines, but thought better and deleted it lol)

After my two bets got stuffed, I decided to leave it after that (though I did bet Iceman Dennis), and watched the Irish Lincolnshire without a bet. Seconds before the off, I looked at Saltonstall who was 33’s, and a lot bigger on the exchanges, but I thought “Nah, not today, too exposed for this”. Initially very happy with myself, having left Good Heavens alone, and watching him drift back rapidly. Turned to despair though when I watched Saltonstall appear on the rail, I knew he’d get there. I did want him to get the race, but there’s that wee bit of human nature as well, where I was probably relieved he didn’t win. Decent payday I missed though, as he would have been a decent lay in running for me, and he got away today. I’ll bide my time with him this summer, but after that, he looks as good as ever. Certainly better than Espoir De Guye, who was my main bet of the day.

One bet tomorrow, but I was very hasty in betting Tico Times at Carlisle. Thought the 14’s was very fair, but I’m not convinced now, and I think it’ll be too soft for him. I took 14’s, but I think he’ll drift past that, though that won’t be an issue as it’s BOG. Think he might get pulled if it rains much more, and at this time, I’m hoping he does. I’ve thrown in Treshnish now as backup at 20’s, as conditions probably more suitable for him, and if his jumping holds out, should outrun his 20’s

Far too short, but hoping to see Thedevilscoachman run well too, and he’s one I’ll be keeping an interest in, going into next season

Having a midweek bet, but I suppose I’d better give a quick mention to that Carlisle race on Sunday. Both of them were desperate. That’s that covered.

At Naas today, I’ve bet Wee Small Hours, who I had a good run with two years back. It didn’t go well backing a couple of Irish 14yo’s last season, but he seems as good as ever. Got his head in front a couple of runs back, and was running the race of his life last time at Down Royal. I was paying close attention to Roi Mage, and was cursing myself as Wee Small Hours took it up at 66’s. Unfortunately he battered the third last, and rider lost his irons. I think he would have won. Back over hurdles here, and he won’t be up against the likes of Roi Mage, Burrows Saint, or Longhouse Poet here, so at 14’s, I have to have a go. If he’s in the same form (can be inconsistent), then I’ll be disappointed if I can’t get my stake back.

Put up The Connector as one I’d be backing earlier in the season, but completely missed his decent opening price, and had to watch him win without backing him. I’d love to back him today, but I need the opposite this time, and I need him to drift before I’d consider. Notebook horse Lovely Reaction back out, but too short after a shocker last time, and Midnight Ginger too short, but I’d be disappointed if she can’t win at Warwick.

After the performance of that pair at Carlisle, it might just make sense to bet just the one.

Very average from Wee Small Hours, and though up with them for a long way, never close to getting cash back. Felt better for the shorties I swerved, as they were equally bad.

Only one bet Saturday, and sticking with the one I bet for The Lincoln at the initial entry stage, Empirestateofmind. Really liked him last year, and hoping he can give me a run for my money. He was certainly the one who jumped out at that time.

Other than that, it’s a very very average days racing, so I’ll stick with the one.

Really happy with that run from Empirestateofmind yesterday, as bet at initial entry stage. Had enough on (along with NR Air to Air), that I was keen to claw the stake back, and managed that easy enough, though strictly stake only.

Fiveaftermidnight the main bet in The Ulster National today, but I’ve got savers in with Wa Wa and Mortal.

Always like this Ascot card, and though my sensible head tells me the 1645 is between Two For Gold, and Larry, at 12’s, I had to stick with Wishing and Hoping. I’m hoping he goes bigger, but back to 11’s at moment. Can see him giving it his all out front as usual, before the younger legs pick him off late home

Maybe not delighted with the run, but very happy with the result, as Fiveaftermidnight nabbed the EW Money. Fairly hefty bet on her, and just relieved she made the frame. I really thought she’d win though

Not too often I bet at Ludlow on a Monday, but giving Good Boy Bobby another go off this mark, and after his encouraging run at Cheltenham

Bob, with connections of Dashel Drasher winning his appeal does that mean you get paid the forecast? If you weren’t already with first past the post?
