A trainer of two Gold Cup winners yet he probably will not even have a runner at Cheltenham next week. Can anyone suggest any reasons for such a decline in fortunes?

As
The Bible
says,
"Time and Chance happen to them all"
(Ecclesiastes 9:11)

Seriously, Chance was one of the most successful bumper trainers so it seemingly isn’t anything to do with owner’s wanting instant results.

My Horses-in-Training from that period are in the loft but I might venture up there and see what sort of numbers he had – probably find that he didn’t supply the information
March 11, 2011 at 20:15 #344234When Mr Mulligan won in 1997 he had only 14 horses in his stable, which had risen to 27 when Looks Like Trouble won in 2000. According to Horses in Training he had between 40 and 50 in the middle part of the last decade, 28 last season and 16 this season. Since he is only 60 years old this year, perhaps there is still time for more glory yet. If he gets down to 14 horses next year he might win the Gold Cup again!
