I quite often read people on here slagging off Fergus Wilson for running no hopers in big races. Well, 5th and 10th in the National isn’t bad is it! Should 100 – 1 no hopers be running?

Mon Mome 100 – 1

i am presuming you backed this today.. and therefore the above question was answered.. is there such a thing as a no hoper lol, i would say no… everything has a chance obviously some smaller than others…
April 5, 2009 at 01:58 #220392The last 100/1 winner was Foinavon and he won because he was the only horse to complete without being remounted ie he won because all his rivals for one reason or another were totally or temporarily out of the race. All credit to him as he kept going and had 7 more fences to clear solo. Today’s 100/1 winner won on his merit – I can’t ever re-call so many horses in with a chance approaching the last fences – and the other "no-hopers" finishing 5th and 10th did really well too.
PS Mon Mome finished 10th last year so we know which "no-hoper" to back in 2010!!!April 5, 2009 at 02:55 #220401This is why Gary Wil(t)shire et al is (are) such a ******(s). It was ridiculous that Mon Mome and Preists (sic) Lane were such big prices.
April 5, 2009 at 03:44 #220408Is a 100/1 shot winning really such a suprise?
The last one was way back in the 60’s 66 I think.
So how many 100/1+ horses have run in the race since Foinavon?
Allowing for the bookies mark up, you can surely expect a 100/1+ winner once in about 300 100/1+ shots to race.
Therefore it was about time another won. All these 100/1+ shots add up.
