Hello,
Once Champion Jockey, Kevin Darley retired today, but there was a hardly a mention from the media. [or I missed it
].OK, I understand his retirement was over shadowed by the exciting Champion Jockey events, but I feel that probably one of the best Northen jockeys for years should have received a better send off.
Kevin is an unassuming gentleman who was commited to his trade, and made a grand job of it considering the material he was given.
He didn’t have a Frankie charisma but he certainly was the ultimate professional who adores the sport. It maybe apt that his retirement was celebrated in the way he carried out his job, with a minimum of fuss.
Let’s hope that the Racing Industry doesn’t let this man drift away from the sport, and find him a position that befits an ex-Champion Jockey, who plied his trade with dignity, and, something that is important considering current events,….. honesty. A true Role Model.

regards,
doyley
November 10, 2007 at 22:29 #124069Well said. It was a shame he couldn’t have one last ride from the Mark Johnston stable today, after all the winners they’d had in the past.
November 10, 2007 at 22:29 #124070Hello,
I believe CH4 did a small piece. Probably could have been longer and more in depth but for the Jockey Championship.
The RP "article" on page 7 was small, maybe because Kevin wasn’t exactly a "Media Whore". He was comparatively shy & unassuming therefore extracting a lengthy interview could have been a nightmare.
Yep, Kevin conducted his jockey life with a minimum of fuss..

November 10, 2007 at 22:34 #124072In the build up to the November Handicap, Channel 4 paid an extensive tribue to Kevin Darley.
Ok, ‘extensive’ might be going OTT, but they certainly paid him some nice compliments and concentrated on him for around 5 minutes before the race.
But all the same, he still deserves a massive ‘good luck for the future’ and a massive ‘thank you for the memories’.
Apparantly he is on record as saying he is "open to any offers" with regards to jobs within the sport, so no doubt he will feature a lot on our tv screens as either a pundit/analyst/presenter (or whatever they call them these days) over the coming months.

I agree with doyley all way, although a "media whore" is not really the words i would use so try and put it a more polite way so not to offend.
November 10, 2007 at 22:45 #124083Hello,
I have to go along with DJ on that one…somehow Kevin as a pundit/commentator would project Carson’s performances as BAFTA winning…

A job with young jockeys’ somewhere maybe in order…

November 10, 2007 at 22:46 #124085Hello,
As I said Kevin is no way a Media Whore, but unfortunately our game, and sport generally, is full of them…

Sorry if that sounded a bit of a random question – but it’s a topic in the ‘Lounge’ forum at the mo

November 10, 2007 at 23:57 #124106He was interviewed on Five Live this morning and came over as pretty articulate and not short of a word or two. Mind, that was for a three-minute chat rather than a three-hour RUK / ATR punditry slot.
He reaffirmed that the first thing he is going to do is b*gger all for a while, but hopes his 30 years’ experience will be put to some constructive use within the industry before too long.

November 11, 2007 at 09:55 #124148"the first thing he is going to do is b*gger all" – I sincerely and most emphatically hope I’m not included in the ‘all’ referred to by young Mr Darley.
On a more serious note I started getting seriously into racing at around the same time that Kevin Darley was a top apprentice and he’s therefore been around all my ‘racing life’. I think he’s been a credit to the sport and I was delighted when he started getting on some top class horses during the second half of his career.
Kevin – I am delighted you’ve come out unscathed and wish you all the best for whatever it is you decide to do next. Thank you.

Is it just me that thinks he’s been sold down the river, after years of faithful service, on the whim of ‘Mr Always Trying’?
November 11, 2007 at 10:10 #124153Yes i liked CH4 piece on him. Think the other channels did pieces few days beforehand but no final bang to say goodbye. It’s a shame as he was a great jockey and will be missed up here.
I’m sure we’ll still see him in and about the media however
