What is it with Henderson and his chasers. L’ami serge today a prime example of a novice of his not jumping well. He only had 13 chase winners last season.
Only had 15 so far this season. Is it something he does but when you look at his chasers they never seem that fluent. Josses Hill a good example yesterday seemed to ballon the fences.February 13, 2016 at 14:56 #1233516Haven’t backed a Henderson horse all season after losing the only 1 or 2 times I backed one his his last year.

Yeah- that Sprinter Sacre can’t jump for toffee. And don’t get me started on how crap Remittance Man was over an obstacle!
February 14, 2016 at 11:52 #1233603Gladiateur, I mean in general. I am not saying he can’t train because that would be stupid, however my comment is about in recent times how many struggle to jump fluently. Ues Aprinter Sacre is a good jumper but that is one.
Last season he had 13 chase winners which for a top tariner tells its own story surely.February 14, 2016 at 14:12 #1233626Yes, since the milkshakes have gone, Mr. Henderson has a rather modest strike rate with his chasers.
This season he has had 15 chase winners, with Full Shift the only horse running and winning in a field of nine!!!! All other winners have come in 6-runner races or less. L’Ami Serge a prime example of winning “bumper chases”: both wins came in races where 4 fences had to be bypassed due to the bad ground and he only faced a total of 5 opponents in those races. Yesterday when having to jump proper fences his limitations were quite rapidly exposed, though by a very good horse in my opinion.February 14, 2016 at 14:20 #1233628Although he has had a few good/great chasers over the years you could argue that he has had a lot more success/more known for his hurdlers – I don’t know if it is the horses he gets but a lot of his chasers over the years have all seemed to have had injury issues (Sprinter, Bobs Worth, Simonsig, Triolo D’Alene, Finian’s Rainbow, Long Run and even the aforementioned Remittance Man to name just a few).
Looking on the Racing Post website over the last five years the stats are quite revealing:
Hurdle runners/to winners: 1466 / 374 at 26%
Chase runners/to winners: 616 / 141 at 23%As a comparison, for the same period his two big training rivals are as follows:
Paul Nicholls
Hurdle runners/to winners: 1204 / 275 at 23%
Chase runners/to winners: 1236 / 219 at 23%Phillip Hobbs
Hurdle runners/to winners: 1226 / 212 at 17%
Chase runners/to winners: 1017 / 183 at 18%February 14, 2016 at 21:25 #1233684Yes, since the milkshakes have gone, Mr. Henderson has a rather modest strike rate with his chasers.

What is noticeable is how many of his best horses have suffered from long term injury or loss of form – most, if not all, of the Magnificent Seven from Cheltenham

Not really a big surprise and let’s see who else doesn’t make it. 4 weeks are a very, very long period of time.
