Having a nightmare. Stable under a cloud? Check out todays runners at Kempton and apart from his runner in the Triumph trial at Cheltenham last week running pretty disapointingly
November 24, 2014 at 15:33 #496304Wasn’t we saying this about the same time last year and then he went and completed a big race double on the up and coming weekend with the Hennessy and Fighting Fifth. He had a massive purple patch last Christmas (straight after the Sprinter Sacre scare) with something like 8 winners from 10 and ended up finishing 2nd in the Trainers’ Championship without two of his big guns.
So yes maybe a slight worry at present but I don’t think he’ll be down for long. Maybe it will be the 2 big guns who get him up and running the following weekend (SS in the Tingle Creek and Simonsig if he goes for the Peterborough Chase).
November 24, 2014 at 15:50 #496309True yes true and he does have a high percentage of horses at his own admission that dont like winter ground. Dont know why in that case punters or bookies are making them long odds on.
I’m sure he’ll come good in March!
November 24, 2014 at 15:58 #496312I think he’s an inferior trainer to Nicholls when it comes to getting longevity from his horses and keeping them sound season after season. Whether Simonsig, Sprinter Sacre or My Tent Or Yours ever recapture their best must be a major doubt given his dire recent record when bringing horses back from setbacks. Remember Punjabi, Punchestowns and Grandouet?
I don’t think they’re under a cloud right now though. West Wizard is a hype horse, Polly Peachum probably bumped into two good ones and River Maigue looked like he needed his outing. NJH has had a steady, if not spectacular stream of winners in the last couple of weeks.

You can lay them and make yourself lots of money!
November 24, 2014 at 16:27 #496317My luck Henderson would have had a treble today if I had
November 24, 2014 at 16:34 #496319He’s just had a 1-2 in the last with jockeys Jeremiah McGrath and Nico De Boinville both claiming 3. Must be that other jockey he has who ain’t up to scratch

It very much depends on what they are being bought back from as to the longevity of older horses, most fortunate Denman came back from his heart problem, Nicky Henderson cannot control Sprinters heart, they both had the same veterinary team. It is disappointing Henderson seems to mount a fairly tame challenge, but I don’t think there is a trainer out there with Nicholls obsession to win. 50 horses left Ditcheat last year, maybe his superior training skills are down to buying horses that are ready to go. Don’t forget that after Big Bucks returned from injury he failed to shine and was retired and Pearl Swan was pulled up on his return from injury.

But that is only 2 horses and who’s to say Big Bucks would not have been on the downward spiral without injury. I suppose Denman never got back to his 2008 GC form but that may have been a one off anyway and 3 GC 2nds and a Hennessy off top weight is still a great effort. Nicholls also got the best out of Kauto after he had two leg injuries when only a nipper. Henderson did get Riverside Theatre back after injury to win the Ryanair. But in general I think Nicholls has had much more success with bringing back injured horses. Just hope he has Al Ferof back now as well.

Bizarre that a top NH trainer with the big races run in winter that he states he has a high percentage of horses that don’t like winter ground.

See You Then – remember him?

I imagine that once a serious injury hits a Ditcheat horse its out, along with the horses whose earnings are on the dwain. Remember Dark Lover? had a tendon injury came back, tried as an Arkle horse and where is he now? As a matter of interest do you know of many other injured horses bought back by Nicholls, as I said it is the severity of the injury that makes the difference. Kauto Star had a knee fracture if I recall, tendon injuries are much harder to come back from without re-injury. Didn’t Al Ferof do all his rehab at his owners yard, he cannot take credit for that.
November 24, 2014 at 18:55 #496342What crap. Most rehabilitation will be undertaken away from the trainers yard. Nicholls has a record second to none at keeping horses sweet year after year. Twister is another with this knack.
All trainers regularly clear out the dead wood. Owners who can afford to have a horse with the best aren’t generally going to keep dead wood in training.

If you are referring to my quotes as crap, I’m pretty well qualified ‘crap’ having bought 4 cheltenham winners!!

Precisely what has that fact to do with your ability to talk crap?
You make many assertions regarding Nicholls but clearly are unable to present the facts to support them.

He did say it on TV this season in interview between races on C4, started by saying it’s no secret majority of my horses would prefer better ground or something like that.

But that could be interpreted as 51% of my horses in training prefer better ground but the majority of those 51% don’t actually mind softer ground
