    Out of interest, does anyone know if Kerstin received a mares allowance when she won the 1958 Cheltenham Gold Cup?

    From what I can see Dahlia, she carried the full weight of 12st, whereas
    the better known mare winner, Dawn Run, claimed a 5lb mares’ allowance.

    Cheers Big – just a friendly argument with a friend settled. I imagine the same would apply to African Sister, 1939 Champion Hdl winner ridden by no less than Keith Piggott, Lester’s dad.

    I’m not sure about African Sister Dahlia, perhaps someone with a bit more
    savvy than me could answer that. I know that the other 2 winners, Flakey
    Dove and Dawn Run both claimed the mares’ allowance of 5lbs.

    African Sister carried twelve stones, the same as her male rivals.
