Simply the most stunning game of (American) football I’ve ever seen.
Putting Green Bay’s abismal defence to one side for a moment, Rodgers and Warner threw for a collective 801 yards, with in excess of 1000 total offensive yards, 62 first downs and 13 touchdowns.
Incredible. Just incredible.
The Packers will ultimately be disappointed with how they lost the game, having worked their way back from 31-10 down to receive the ball in the first period of overtime. Rodgers looked for the long ball to Jennings on first down but threw just out of his reach and then had a first down at the 34 turned over after a ridiculous hold by Daryn Colledge. Back at their own 10 they were struggling and the sack on Rodgers that led to the fumble was sadly indicative of Green Bay’s performance on the night.
The wrong result for me, but a game I’ll happily watch again and again. If the game against the Saints is as open as tonight’s was, we could easily see the first 100-point post-season game.

(I’m not suggesting anyone actually bet on the Ravens, they’re one of the most inconsistent teams in football. As a Washingtonian I’m obligated to root for them following the Redskins inevitable mid-season collapse)January 25, 2010 at 13:49 #272011

After last season’s heartbreaking double semi-final loss, New Orleans came through a nervy fourth quarter – Brett Favre throwing an interception in the closing stages was something of an aid – to see off Minnesota in overtime.
If only I’d backed them each-way.

January 26, 2010 at 21:32 #272250Nobody watches the Superbowl for the football! We watch it for the comercials. When they’re paying millions of dollars for a 30-second spot you’ll actually get creative and one-of-a-kind ads, some funny, some horrible, some cute (Budweiser Clydesdales). And The Who at half-time. And the Super Bowl Party with pre-game barbecue. People who don’t care one bit about football (including myself) still tune in. The Super Bowl basically reflects America in our fat, drunken, comercialized glory.

So I’m supporting them.

In the belief that laying off Baltimore and Philadelphia in the Conference Championship games last year somehow jinxed my Superbowl bets on them I avoided the temptation to do the same with New Orleans this time around.
When the Colts went 10-0 up I really did fear for the Saints and Sean Payton’s decision to drive on fourth down had me in fits. But the drop by Garcon, a wonderfully orchestrated onside kick, an inspired Drew Brees and an electric interception return by Tracy Porter gave New Orleans a deserved victory.
Another fantastic game though, entertaining to the last second.
February 8, 2010 at 09:43 #274844The Saints defence were brilliant. How coem they could find a stage for the who, but couldn’t get one for the Saints players ? It was an enjoyable match all the same. They thoroughly deserved their victory for being so resolute.
