Yesterdays Post had the going as good to firm (watered) and a going stick reading of only 6.6. Since when did a reading of 6.6 equate to good to firm?

Only the 12mm of rain overnight on top of the watered ground with more showers forecast.

    Agreed.
The modern media only print what they are told and ask no questions even when a query of what they are being told is obviously needed.
It makes the media an ever more pointless waste of space as a reliable information source.

It is very poor that a top class racetrack such as Newbury cannot be bothered to pay Turftrax to provide a going map for them each meeting. The going varies around the track even if they only provide an average, but still wrong figure.
BHA makes them go to the effort of taking going stick readings all around the track before racing but they are too unaware that having done all the hard work the information is best presented as a map.

Chester used to be scrupulous about providing all the information they had together with a going map but even they have decided not to bother with the map any more. Sad BHA cannot regulate tracks to be forced to communicate information. as part of their licence.

Just for the record, I had the going allowance for

    Newbury

    yesterday at

    -0.58s/f

    (soft).

One of the worst cases of putting the punters away regarding the going happened at

    Listowel

    yesterday, where you had

    Gary O’Brien

"the Voice" stating that due to the rain that had fallen the going was on the soft side, and the official going description for the flat was given as yeilding.

    So how come

    Ashbury Boss

    in the 3.05 ran

    -3.56s

under the standard, and in the 4.10

    Salamzar

    ran

    -1.79s

under the standard, I had the going allowance going off my scale at

    +0.70s/f

    (firm).

Most of the racing pundits, especially the crew at

    RUK

only repeat what they are told, because collectively they haven’t got a scooby

    Turf going allowance table:

    Firm +0.55s/f to +0.63s/f
    Good/firm +0.20s/f to +0.53s/f
    Good -0.25s/f to +0.18s/f
    Good/soft -0.55s/f to -0.28s/f
    Soft -1.00s/f to -0.58s/f
    Heavy -1.58s/f to -1.03s/f

Have you got access to Listowel’s course records by any chance?

I got the going as Good to Firm at Ayr both days as well. They did some watering Thursday night.

I haven’t got the records times for Listowel, but I have a file with all the winning times for each racecourse going back to Jan 2010, just use the filters to sort the racecourse you want to look at.

To be fair, the rain that fell thursday night in to friday was very localised. Where I live had one of the heaviest thunder storms in recent memory (fourty minutes away from the track) but just like Goldilocks, just down the road had none and some spots had just a little. Even if the rain was "forecast", it wasn’t certain to hit the course. So possibly thought they had to water just in case it missed and went from good-firm to "firm"…

Although, I agree – they over-did the watering even allowing for the uncertainty.

I had worked out a couple of races for "good-firm", but when the rains hit my place – could imagine Newbury suffering too (we’re usually on the same trajectory) so gave up studying. The two main bets already placed were non-runners, just left a "saver" bet. Didn’t bother going to Newbury on the Friday.
