May be of interest. Have not seen it yet, but this film seems to be getting some good reviews.

There will never be a better racing movie than “The Rainbow Jacket.”

Looks like it’s out on the 4th vf.

Never say never Mr Davies! I do need to watch The Rainbow Jacket though.

I think my favourite racing film is Champions. As inspiring as the story is, this is mainly due to the music!

Ignore me, Marlingford – I’m rooted in the 1950s!

I thought “Champions” was awful, actually, and John Hurt was horribly miscast as Bob Champion.

And Edward Woodward wasn’t much better as Josh Gifford.

Hurt was far better playing “out there” characters like Caligula in “I, Claudius,” whereas Woodward’s finest hour was surely “The Wicker Man.”

To be honest I can’t remember a great deal about Champions – it’s all about the music! Should probably watch it again.

Jockey has to be better than Trainer.

I’d liked John Hurt in Naked Civil Servant but have only seen it just the once. Champions was too bad, thought the horse in it portrayed Aldaniti well. Seriously though would it have killed them to take actual footage of the race to highlight the struggle he overcome to win.

You've got to accentuate the positive.
    Eliminate the negative.
    Latch on to the affirmative.
Don't mess with mister in between.

I can remember the actual race, although at the time didn’t know about the cancer. I had Spartan Missile in it myself, and my late Dad had backed Aldaniti. Got the film recently at Amazon, but a good second hand video shop might sell it.

The race itself features as one of twelve Grand National in a DVD called 12 Greatest Grand Nationals which came out before the running of the 2012 event. On the wrong horse there Sunnyhillboy

Agreed Woodward was excellent as Plod in the cult film Wickerman. Hurt played on my upright German piano which I donated to a film company some years ago now.
As for Jockey and Collins, he looks a lot like the old Kentucky Kid – Steve Cauthen and at a fit looking 61 he could do the role far more justice and knows the lingo and wouldn’t have to go into weighing room to learn the craft as Collins did. From his stud farm in the bluegrass state a 42 year old Cauthen, who was the youngest jockey to nab the triple Crown said

“If I got fit, physically and mentally, I’d be just as good as I ever was,” Cauthen who was first enticed here by the owner Robert Sangster. He rode principally for the Barry Hills and Henry Cecil yards, and then as Sheikh Mohammed’s retained jockey.”

I don’t know what programme is out there to get mentally fit but I expect it would include denial.
I’d call the film BOOTHS or DEADWOOD and look for a sponsor, and I can guarantee it would take far in excess of $3800 that Jockey took in its first few weeks.
I have a little form and am currently working on a new production called DUMPED which is expected out in the autumn on Netflix.

Steve Cauthen was the best Flat jockey I ever saw or ever will see.

Steve Cauthen was very good. Seemed to have a nice personality with it, which isn’t always the case.

Seasider, your mention of Trainer is certainly a blast from the past. I’m assuming you mean the BBC drama series that was on Sunday evenings in the early 90s. From what I recall, it was intended to be a high-end soap similar to Howards’ Way which had filled a similar slot a few years earlier.

From what little I can remember, I thought it was OK if not overly gripping. I was pleased to see racing get such a high profile show though. Wikipedia tells me it got 6 million viewers which was viewed as a failure back then, but would be a huge success nowadays.
