not that that would take a lot grays…
Transvision Vamp sucked and after a (slightly) promising debut – I Want Your Love (?) – produced tons of relentless Texas-esque pap and were the sort of group your parents pretended to like because they thought they were cool. They weren’t.

March 22, 2005 at 22:45 #90299Can’t argue too much with that precis of Ms James’ earlier incarnation, except (adjusts specs, zips up anorak :biggrin: ), "Tell That Girl to Shut Up" was the first Transvision Vamp single. "I Want Your Love" was the first hit four months later.

April 1, 2005 at 14:47 #90300Somebody gave me a copy of "I Am A Bird Now" by Antony and The Johnsons for my birthday, and I reckon it’s a startlingly good and original album.
Antony, a former drag queen, has a voice like Nina Simone and collaborates with the likes of Boy George and Lou Reed on this. There are also some beautiful string arrangements and other musical touches.

April 1, 2005 at 15:52 #90302Anyone know owt about this Tom Vek lad?
Loved his first single although the title escapes me right now, and got very hooked on I Aint Saying My Goodbyes when it was on Sky yesterday.
One to watch. Or listen to, obviously. Basically he’s rather good.
Aye, Planet Sound (Teletext on 4’s excellent music organ) gave it a good write-up as well, saying the guy sounded like nothing else on this Earth at the moment. A rare bird indeed.

April 2, 2005 at 07:23 #90305I’d be interested in your views on A+TJ, graysons. To tell the truth, at the tenth time of listening I begun to think that it wasn’t so special after all. But it says something that I felt compelled to play it 10 times in 48 hours in the first place!
April 3, 2005 at 21:14 #90307No view as yet, I just saw the review on the teletext. Record-buying activity temporarily curtailed due to financial constraints, bar the odd essential (the new Trembling Blue Stars single, for one).
Having heard the album now, I’ll declare myself as being not especially keen; although that voice is certainly very, very different, and Antony’s life story is hardly workaday either.
You’ll already be aware The Montgolfier Brothers are playing at the Cornerhouse in October, Pruf? I suspect I’ll be making a trip up for that. From the sublime to the ridiculous first, though – I’m seeing Hayseed Dixie in Wolverhampton tomorrow night. Yee-haw, the rockgrass revolution continues!

September 14, 2005 at 19:58 #90311Weird as it sounds there’s something about the way Anthony from A & TJ sings that just makes me a bit….well bloody scared frankly. Okay that’s the wrong description but it puts me on edge and although I haven’t heard the album, so far it sounds like a cat being murdered in a particularly weird horror movie.
I’m not impressed.
But hey that may change but I’m not shelling out for the album in a hurry.
Growing ever more to love Hard Fi and have done for a while now, but The Back Room by The Editors is the surprising favourite of my CD collection of the year so far. Love it.
Was given a copy of the Stereophonic’s album this week by a friend, fell out of love with them of late but there are some good songs on it and I’m kind of renewing my enjoyment of them…Zome will kill me when she reads that…I’m sorry…well I’m not but….anyway…. :biggrin:
Hoping to go to Franz Ferdinand supported by The Editors and The Rakes soon, if somebody would only give me a bloody job!The Foo Fighters, buggers, went and sold out their gig at Earls Court on my birthday before I could afford tickets :( BUT …. I am going to see Bob Dylan soon! Wahey!

…and still to produce a second album five years on. Ye gods, man, who do you think you are? My Bloody Valentine?
Still give this Vek track very regular airings. Splendid stuff. Think the crocodile had tinitis by the end of the video, though;

June 3, 2010 at 17:21 #298449gc….never thought I’d see My Bloody Valentine mentioned on these pages. Would have given good odds on that happening.
June 3, 2010 at 19:45 #298472That Franz Ferdinand, Editors, Rakes concert was damned good value for £20..seems like a long time ago now…which it was….

How little you know us.
Well, why stop at just mentioning MBV – how about a quick blast (and blast being the operative word) as well?http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=djnQJJn0CHI
Twenty years newer, meanwhile, but worshipping at a similar sonic cathedral, come these noisy Norwegians;

It’s like prising open the Blue Peter time capsule, isn’t it!
Five years is a lifetime on these boards.The resurrection of this thread came courtesy of some testing I was doing of the Search facility, which I’m thrilled to say Corm has got working fully now and appears to be able to retrieve threads from pretty much the dawn of TRF time. Massive, massive thanks, Corm – beers are owed!
