Jim is just one of the strange inhabitants that make the racing environment so much fun to observe.Without them it might be just another boring game. How about Aidan following Mick Kinane around talking to both mick and the mike at the same time as the horse is halfway down to the start.Or Lester cocking the other ear so as not to hear the question. Or Dermot telling us exactly how many winners he has trained but that this one is the first ‘west of the Shannon" for the sheik. I could go on on and on but I won’t.Without these people racing would be a boring success.Yes Clivex thanks for pointing me.
June 10, 2008 at 07:18 #167653Neither trainer nor interviewee is a reflexion on anyone else except the one who did them. Likewise neither Fallon’s riding nor his drug problem is a reflection on his origin.Anyone who told you otherwise is a fool. But the Irish will be both proud and shamed by the behavior of oirish people, only natural. This phenomenon or trait may be shared by other ethnic groups.
So I presume, if you are English, you would feel ashamed when a case was brought against Alan Berry after the Hillside girl debacle, although the case was later dropped as was Fallon’s race fixing charges. Can’t see it myself to be honest.

Can you honestly believe that the horse was left in by mistake?

June 11, 2008 at 02:24 #167770Fully agree with Firefox here- it will be a shame if this affair continues to cloud the career of a potentially great racehorse. Time to get over it and move on, methinks.

Why not? It happens I suppose. I can think of a horse withdrawn from the Gold Cup by error. Theres a lot of paper work and admin to be done.
And above all, …and this is what no one has been able to offer. Why would he lie and how did he get the Sheik and his representatives to work with it??SHL
June 11, 2008 at 02:56 #167776If all you can take from Saturday’s race is a bitter taste based up a media led storm then you are not really racing fans imo.
Apart from being sanctimonious, this is ridiculous. Any true racing fan would wish to see decent transparency and respect from trainers regardless of horses achievements
Media led? So no punters felt a greivance before being seemingly told so by the media? No punters could work out for themselves that they had been fed total rot for months?

Is this still going on?
Will go over my reasoning again.Like most trainers Jim Bolger did not tell the whole truth, big deal.
In his two year old carreer NA seemed to act well on good-firm before improving on a soft surface in the Dewhurst. Jim believes New Approach acts on any going.
Had he said in March "Based on his two year old record, I do not want to run the horse at Epsom because I do not believe New Approach will handle the preliminaries". Mr. Bolger would’ve been castigated by his new owners, possibly even losing the horse to Godolphin. Indeed no trainer would say such a thing because a temperamental slur by connections may well hinder a horse’s stud career.
The Irish Derby was the obvious race over 1m4f for him as that would not put as much pressure on his suspect temperament.
In the English Guineas New Approach behaves better than expected.
New Approach is kept in the English Derby just in case of injury before the Irish 2000 Guineas. With excuses made, so that it is easier to fend off the racing press with a one liner. It is also possible the issue of "i’m not running him" was used to get more concessions for the preliminaries. Epsom wanted New Approach to be there.
In the Irish 2000 he behaves better than expected.
However, in the Irish 2000 Guineas the horse demonstrates a dislike of firm ground.
Bolger still says he will not run in the English Derby, believing it will come too soon. However, the horse recovers well.
There is a deluge at Epsom.
There is no point in waiting for an Irish Derby when it could come up firm again and Epsom is guaranteed to be good or softer. Particularly now that it seems New Approach’s temperament is not such a great concern and Godolphin has no obvious candidate.
The English Derby was not thought of as the objective until other considerations changed.
I backed it at 47/1 when left in the Derby, if I remember rightly it came in to around 25/1 before Jim said it would not run, then went out to 200/1 before JB’s change of mind. Unfortunately my bet was only very small, but it was possible to read between the lines. Or at least take a chance (at the price) of a change of heart.

The English Derby was thought of as an option just a couple of days after his Curragh run, when the horse was found to have taken little out of himself.
Jim Bolger was explicit on this in his post-Derby interview with RUK, so any pretence that he was ‘left in by accident’ a week later is just plain laughable.June 11, 2008 at 11:50 #167798The English Derby was thought of as an option just a couple of days after his Curragh run, when the horse was found to have taken little out of himself.

Final forfeit stage where New Approach should have been withdrawn 23rd May. (1)
Date of Irish 2000 Guineas 24th May (2)
Date horse was noted to have come out of the race fitter than expected 27th May (3)
Date first approach made to connections regarding running the horse 1st June (4)
But hey why let little detail like the facts get in the was of a good old prejudice

June 12, 2008 at 00:16 #167910Thanks, paul, for including the emoticon. Didn’t intend any editorialising. Poorly today and have spent all day in front of telly and computer – going doolally and feeling sensitive.
