Hi all,
Just read the ‘destined to be a star…..’ thread and I noticed a few of you saying the horse you were talking about was a brilliant jumper.
So my simple question is, which horse do you regard as being the best jumper of a fence that you have ever seen?
It’s probably a bit strange that my selection actually fell twice and unseated his rider twice, but my best memory of a fantastic jumper was Young Hustler. I just thought on his day he was an absolutely brilliant jumper who never touched a twig. The way he attacked some of those National fences both in the Beecher Chase and the National was breathtaking.
I look forward to your memories and thoughts.

September 24, 2007 at 20:50 #116264Don;t know about chasers but most fluent hurdlers of recent times would have to be Benbyas, Make A Stand and Saif Sareea (biased).
September 24, 2007 at 20:55 #116265Remittance Man and Edredon Bleu over fences (of the ones I’ve seen since I started following racing).
September 24, 2007 at 20:58 #116268Hardy Eustace is a wonderful hurdler. U forget the hurdles are there
Best Mate was as economical jumper as you could hope to see. Desert Orchid as thrilling. Another that sticks in my mind is Dublin Flyer
Yes…remittance man too
September 24, 2007 at 21:02 #116269Double Silk was by far the best jumper of a fence I have seen, especially considering the almost Richard Hills-esque handicap of having Ron Treloggan up top.
Mysilv and Make A Stand stood out as two extremely fast, fluent hurdlers.

September 24, 2007 at 21:04 #116271Good shout with Dublin Flyer Clivex.
I remember him sticking to the rail, going the shortest way round, and making some excellent leaps in many of his races.
His win in the John Hughes sticks out as a wonderful exhibition of jumping.

September 24, 2007 at 21:11 #116274Grey Abbey was a superb jumper. His performance at Aintree (was it ’05) was fantastic.
Harchibald is a superb jumper of a hurdle.
September 24, 2007 at 21:21 #116275I’m showing my age, but nothing has ever jumped better than a Dickenson horse called The Mighty Mac.
He won the old SGB Handicap Chase at Ascot and he visibly slowed down at each of the five turns in the race. But as soon as he could see the next line of fences, he took off again.
Tingle Creek going down the far side at Sandown on fast ground was something to see as well.

September 24, 2007 at 21:40 #116278Crisp……………just for his jumping around Aintree. I have never seen a horse, before or since, who jumped those fences with such abandon. Dickie Pitman must have had the thrill of his life that day. A day that was only spolied by a horse called Red Rum! I have never forgiven him!

September 24, 2007 at 21:53 #116279I remember channel 4 showing Dublin Flyer jumping a fence, and they then measured how far he had cleared, he took off from way outside the wings – I’ve got it on video somewhere, I’m going to dig it out and see how far it was. But Desert Orchid for the exhuberance, and also the fact that when I watched him racing it was before I had realised how dangerous it was and actually enjoyed watching him……
September 25, 2007 at 09:13 #116304I agree with the comments regarding Remittance Man, Best Mate and Dublin Flyer. One of the best jumpers of hurdles and fences in my opinion is Katarino who twice won the Foxhunters over the Aintree fences and also won the triumph hurdle at Cheltenham in his younger days. Only blemish was when his jockey was unseated once but otherwise he jumped boldly and was a pleasure to watch.
September 25, 2007 at 09:25 #116306I’ll never forget Fondmorts leap at the last in the Tripleprint at Cheltenham a few years ago. What a jump that was.
It was always such a pleasure to watch that horse jump around Cheltenham.

I’ll second that… on both counts!

He was as elastic and adjustable a jumper as I’ve ever seen, as well as being able to stand off and ping them. The closest since was Barnbrook Again, another who jumped like a cat.
September 25, 2007 at 09:38 #116310Sprowston Boy was the best jumper of a hurdle I have ever seen.
For his size, Northern Starlight was an incredible jumper of a fence.
September 25, 2007 at 09:59 #116311Moehat – I remember the one, I think it was at Warwick. Fantastic leap, clearly wasn’t just me who remembered that one well.
