Regal Encore 25/1 for me, looked outpaced by the Mullins horse at the festival and was traveling extremely nicely up until that point and gave the impression he’d relish an extra few furlongs to cruise along in.

Lost his firt race back this season and I was very dissapointed. However he was 2 lengths behind the winner Garde La Victoire that day and that form was franked a couple of days ago when GLV won by a big 11 lengths, defeating Gone Too Far in the process.
Regal Encore then won next time out with McCoy keeping him in 3rd gear right up to the line, he beat nothing but it was still rather impressive and gave the impression that he’d get an axtra half furlong.
Really hope they send him to this race, have £30 e/w (25/1) on him for it.
November 22, 2013 at 12:13 #459258Faugheen is my fancy for this. There was massive word for him long before he won his bumper and he didn’t disappoint. Ruby Walsh was still struggling to hold him three jumps out in his recent maiden hurdle and when he let him go he went clear impressively. His jumping could have been a bit better but I’d be hoping that going a faster pace in a better race will iron out any mistakes. He’s my big hope for the season to be honest, looks a machine.

Hadn’t realised Faugheen had made his seasonal debut! Going to watch that race when I get back in from work as racing post won’t let me watch any videos at the moment due to bloody "technical issues" – may as well throw my money down the drain!

Where do you think Briar Hill is going to go? At similar prices I think he is much the more solid option given his course form and seemingly solid jumping. Faugheen probably does have bags of ability but I am not so sure how much of it would be on display if we get quicker ground next March. The biggest problem for punters is guessing the targets. I think I was pretty unfortunate to get Chanpagne Fever’s target wrong last season (the ground on the first day was quicker than they expected and the horse keeping him out of the Albert Bartlett ended up not running) but a loss is a loss. At present I would see Briar Hill in the Neptune and Faugheen in the Albert Bartlett but I could easily be wrong again.

It’s a tough one Stilvi I’ll give you that! I think Faugheen will end up in the Neptune. He made his debut over 2m 6f but I wouldn’t read too much into that. He’ll be dropped in trip next time and by the sounds of it they’re not in a hurry to step him up. He’s entered in the Royal Bond so if he goes there next I can’t see him ending up in the Albert Bartlett (although maybe the Supreme will come in to consideration ). Also, I think what is perceived as Mullins’ best novice usually goes for the Neptune, but maybe that’s just a misconception I have in my head, or purely coincidental.
Briar Hill won his maiden Hurdle over 2m 2f and Mullins nominated the Grade 1 hurdle race at Navan as his next target, think it’s the one that Boston Bob and Pont Alexandre won. He has a more relaxed way of travelling than Faugheen and if one of them goes for the Bartlett I’d say it’ll be Briar Hill.
Throw in Moyle Park, Clondaw Court and a few others, it’s no wonder Mullins doesn’t know himself until the 11th hour!
NRFB looks the way to go backing any of them.

It isn’t so easy if your VC account has been closed!
November 22, 2013 at 21:55 #459347Oscar Rock for me. Loved it last season, sticking with it for this.
The horse it beat in it’s final bumper run by several lengths came second in the Aintree bumper.
The horse it beat in it’s hurdle debut, given 7lbs and a 19 length hammering, has won since.Wonderful horse.
Probably add a couple of others at a later date but that’s my main selection

Indeed for me too TT. Was a little disappointed he got beat at Newcastle, but I think Hughes could have made a bit more use of him, he was running on well at the finish.
Now Ballyalton has come out and beat a good field at Cheltenham that form is looking rock solid.
The Neptune is definately the plan, they have Urban Hymn for the AB so Ante-Post bets can be made with a reasonable degree of certainty unlike many of the other ‘fancied’ contenders.
A little 25/1 is unmatched on BF.December 19, 2013 at 12:10 #462210Money for Faugheen for this in the past week and Briar Hill shortening for the Bartlett today.
Still fancy Faugheen strongly for this. His jumping improved from debut to his second race and with some more improvement he’ll be very hard to beat. He has serious speed imo so see this as his likely destination.

I agree completely, going to have him as my 2nd horse for the race, Faugheen’s a very impressive horse.

Briar Hill was tipped up by Nick Watts in today’s Post. There are punters out there who have noticed something in his tips that I haven’t. This it has to be said looks like one of his better ones with Kings Palace making the market for just about anything else.
December 19, 2013 at 19:22 #462264I didn’t know that Stilvi, do you think he has enough of a following to move the price a point or two?
At any rate the money for Faugheen has been pretty steady so I’m hoping it’s the right money.

Given his record I find it surprising but Briar Hill had been relatively steady so I can’t think of any other reason. He has also tipped Big Shu at 8/1 and as I mentioned to you that was cut a few days ago to 6/1.
December 20, 2013 at 12:31 #462391When I didn’t see Faugheen entered at Leopardstown over Christmas I presumed they’d wait until January with him but he holds an entry at Limerick… Over three miles
Why do you do this to us Willie?
He has a few others in it but the other big two (Rathvinden and Valseur Lido) have alternative engagements, with Valseur Lido declared to run at Navan tomorrow and Rathvinden entered over 2m 3f at Limerick.
December 21, 2013 at 21:14 #462660Won convincingly over 22f but a weak race. Has to see which horse is more likely to beat Kings Palace.
January 25, 2014 at 18:48 #466006After Rathvinden’s defeat today, is it now safe to assume that Faugheen is Mullins’ number one for this race? Or is there still a possibility that Faugheen goes for the Albert Bartlett?
Red Sherlock will certainly prove hard to beat in the Neptune.
