Sadly these horses were lost at Market Rasen yesterday. Mutual Respect finished 4th but I’m not sure what actually happened. On the replay he looked OK and the commentator didn’t say anything …
Special Envoy broke a hind leg – either as he took off to jump the hurdle or as a result of making a hash of the jump – I didn’t hear any mention of him either following the race.
RIP both lovely horses.July 20, 2010 at 20:59 #307632Sadly it was obvious a stride after the hurdle that Special Envoy had gone very badly wrong. He was a nice horse who never seemed to get the big win he deserved. I can remember him falling at the last in both Aintree and Haydock some years back, in both cases looking like the winner.
RIPJuly 20, 2010 at 22:02 #307651I backed special envoy at Haydock a ton ew at 33/1 I was counting my money approaching the last unstoppable i thought and was reckoning the return. I think Paddy Brennan was up that day and I dont know who was the most gutted me or him he could hardly get up after that god awful slither. It will always have a place in my heart for the wrong reasons, twould have been a great pickup for me that.
I still wonder what happened to Mutual Respect? I thought he finished the race.
July 20, 2010 at 22:36 #307655ETW…..he should have won it easily! I remember both races well. Wasn’t on, but was gutted for the horse. I think it was actually Paddy Merrigan (remember him?) who was up both starts. You’re right, seem to recall the jockey being gutted after the Haydock fall.
July 20, 2010 at 23:40 #307666I’ve only just realised who Special Envoy was; I can remember the race at Aintree as if it were yesterday, because it makes me so angry when a jockey’s first concern isn’t for the horse. Peter Bowen’s wife commented afterwards that ‘God will repay many times over what the Devil has taken away’. Sadly, she was very wrong and the fates were against the horse all along. RIP Special Envoy and Mutual Respect.
July 21, 2010 at 22:30 #307828It was Tom O’Brien at Aintree and Paddy Merrigan at Haydock. I know he really liked that horse, losing the ride on him and Souffleur was one of the things that caused one of his departures.
Off topic, Merrigan could’ve been a top jockey but his temperament was always a little dodgy. He had another comeback in Ireland earlier this year but had a bad fall from Bobs Way in Down Royal on St Patricks Day. The last I heard he had put on weight recovering from injury and was doing some showjumping.
