Just to let you all know we had a great time at Cheltenham on New Years Day.
As some of you will know it was the first time the missus had been to Cheltenham even though she originates from Stroud and the wind was vicious!!

I managed to back one winner and three thirds but the glorious boss ( she who must be followed) bet FIVE WINNERS yes five!! and a second and a third in the other two races !!

It just shows she doesn’t just back stupid prices !!

The prices she had on the winners were 9/2 9/2 7/2 8/1 6/1 !!! Quite amazing really!!
the second was 11/2 and the third 11/1 and to be honest she backed a 25/1 place in the race where she backed the 6/1 winner!!

All I can say is she managed to stop us losing on the day with all my losers!!

Fantastic stuff mate, she is a card that MrsRaymo….. :rose:
Myself and deaf Jon got all the way down to Exeter but thought better of it as the weather was woeful. Did back the two short ones at Exeter along with Seeyouatmidnight and the short one at Punchestown that Mullins said is lining up for the 4 miler so had a good day anyway, even managed to a New years day pint with the old football lot.

Sounds like an incredible day Raymo, huge respect to Mrs Raymo.

I’ve never been to Cheltenham, but I’m thinking about maybe
going to The Festival on Gold Cup Day this year (before I peg out).

My sister in law stays in Wellesbourne, 30 miles from the course and
has suggested I should travel down and stay there, and it’s only an
    hours journey.

There are still Club, Tattersalls and Best Mate Enclosure tickets
available, but the Tattersalls and Guinness Grandstand tickets are
sold out. There are still Guinness View tickets available although
they are the dearest at £190.

I would previously have been happy going to the enclosure, but my
old pins aren’t what they used to be, and therefore my only option
would be the Guinness View ticket which guarantees a Guinness
    Grandstand seat.

I’ve never been to the course so wondered what you thought about
being positioned there. I’d imagine you would have access to the
paddock, although there is no mention of this. I wondered if it
would give access to the winners enclosure, again no mention
of that on the ticket info. I don’t know how much of a problem it
would be trying to park at the course, or if it would be advisable
    to train or bus in.

Any opinions or advice from anyone with knowledge of the course, in
particular at The Festival would be welcome :good:

I’d imagine you would have access to the paddock although it’s invariably wedged at the Festival and Gold Cup Day is the busiest of the lot. Unlike other meetings I usually just give up on the paddock for most races – it’s just too much hassle getting around – although it remains to be seen what effect the new stand will have. I recommend watching a race from the centre course – it’s quieter and you get a different perspective – you can get a cup of tea without a big queue too.

As for parking, you can of course park on course (extra cost) but it will be slow getting out.

For some reason it seems to rain on GC day more often than any of the others too :)

Don’t let this put you off – the festival is brilliant – the last day I missed was Kicking King’s Gold Cup.

Many thanks GD, I can imagine that the paddock must be incredibly busy so maybe I might
have to give that a miss. I like the sound of seeing some of the racing from the centre
course, I’m not sure if you can access that from all areas.

What the package includes is …..

    Includes

    Tattersalls Ticket
    Guinness Grandstand Seat
Reserved Area behind the Guinness Grandstand with viewing over the Guinness Village
    Pay bar
    Sandwiches and Snacks

I’ve no idea what the Guinness Village is, but I’m more interested in getting a decent
view of the racing and experiencing the atmosphere. I don’t know if the area I would be
in would give any view of the winners enclosure. I also wonder how easy it would be to
get a bet on, I would imagine the cues must be pretty big. I normally enjoy trying to
get my bet on, watching for a bookmaker who might be offering best odds. If it is hard
to get near them I’d maybe have to settle for getting my bets on before I go.

Thanks again for the advice :good:

If you have a Tattersalls ticket you can access the paddock easily enough. Now the new stand is finished there is lots more room above the old viewing areas immediately around the paddock. If you want to stand in front of the winners emclosure I suggest going there whilst a race is on as most of the crowd will be out the front of the stands watching the racing and then holding your place. You can watch the current race on the big screen which looks down on the parade ring. There are seats around the parade ring but they go quickly. If you grab one before racing you could even stay there all afternoon and watch the racing on screen and see all the pre and post race action in front of you.

I don’t think you can access the centre of the course as access is via the bottom corner of the members lawn.

Special yellow busses run from the station to the course and back,£3 single or £5 return but there is no parking there.

That sounds terrific Diamond Geezer, it would be great to see them going round the paddock
if it’s not too hard to get there. I like the sound of heading down to the winners enclosure
whilst the race is on and trying to get a place, or as you say, getting there early and
getting a seat and watching the races on the big screen. To be there when the Gold Cup winner
was lead into the the winners enclosure, would be as good as it gets.

Many thanks for the inside info DG :good:

I haven’t been for many years but other than the travelling the three days of the Festival used to be a highlight of my year. In those days you could buy three Club tickets for less than £190. I think it is well worth sampling the spectacle at least once. Personally, for £190 I think you should get the best seat in the house.

If you didn’t make it this year perhaps you could test the water with one of the ‘quieter’ days?

Hope it meets with your expectations.

    Hi Stilvi

Many thanks for that and I take your point,it makes a lot of sense,
but the way I’m looking at it is I’m not getting any younger. I’ve
lost some important people in the last year or so and it makes you
think. I’m getting that little voice in my head saying “what are
you waiting for?”. So I think it’s straight into the deep end for
me on this occasion, I’d hate to miss out on that experience.

I hope, like it was for you, that it’s the highlight of my year :good:
