I am guessing this is one for the point-to-pointers. Anyone know anything about this jockey? Has been riding for John Needham and done pretty well to get a couple of long-priced places.
December 19, 2011 at 18:11 #383284Unfortunately I’ve got nothing on him yet, Stilvi. He wasn’t on the last spreadsheet of qualified Pointing / hunter chase riders I receive, which dates back to the very start of November.
His first Rules ride was on November 12th, so he’s either not going to embark on a parallel itinerary between the flags, or – more likely – his papers came through just after that last update.
John Needham is based in one of the most densely populated areas for Point-to-Point trainers, riders and horses (the likes of Whitwick Manor and Brampton Bryan attract among the biggest entries of the season, if not the biggest), so I’d be astonished if it’s not the intention for the lad to get more race-riding experience in that sphere this winter.
The Welsh Border Area Pointing season doesn’t kick off until Whitwick on February 18th, but there’s over 200 horses entered for the first West Midlands Area meeting at Chaddesley Corbett (Worcestershire) a week on Tuesday and Mr Cooper’s as likely to get rides at that as anywhere else in the short term.
Will drop you a line if anything more solid comes to hand.

Might turn out to Robert Cooper from At The Races at this rate. Putting up a few pounds, or indeed, stones of overweight though. Good old Bob.
December 31, 2011 at 15:16 #385149Terrific story today at Uttoxeter.
December 31, 2011 at 17:40 #385170He rode a great race on Elton Fox today, steadying up at the last hurdle nicely and sending him on for a great finish.
January 1, 2012 at 18:46 #385289A bit of background about Robert Cooper in today’s Racing Post. Colin Russell quotes him:
"I had a few winenrs for Steve Brookshaw many years ago, but the weight got the better of me and as I was sick of getting moderate rides in point-to-points I gave up for eight years. Then I got a job with John (Needham) and I do all the schooling myself at home so I decided to give it another go. It’s a day I’ll never forget."
Bad news is that’s he’s been referred to the BHA over his ride on Elton Fox as he was well over the whip limit.
January 1, 2012 at 19:23 #385294Just typical
January 1, 2012 at 19:57 #385302I wondered if it was the same person who rode in points in N/W a few years back … so it is!

…and hit with a 52-day ban today for using the persuader 23 times in total.

He’ll be the toast of the Jockeys in the weighing room today with that one!
January 12, 2012 at 13:16 #386564January 12, 2012 at 14:00 #386570One has to wonder why he connected 23 times though
He says they were unintentional which is fair enough but they still happened.

He should never be allowed to ride a horse in public again and that is regardless of whatever whip rules may be in forceJanuary 12, 2012 at 16:03 #386589As someone who is firmly in the anti-whip camp clearly Mr Cooper has to take his punishment although I do wonder if this level of ban would have been given to a ‘name’ rather than effectively a ‘nobody’.
I have to be honest and say at the time I didn’t notice anything wrong with the ride. I would also add I haven’t seen a jockey at any level do more in terms of pushing/shoving/cajoling mounts along this season. Mortimers Cross on the fateful day was a good example and pleased to see he reaped the benefit today. Very surprised he hadn’t been offered some outside rides.
January 12, 2012 at 16:26 #38659323 times including 14 after the last?! Surely the ban must come with some maths tutoring thrown in?

Yes – but this thread is not about Dettori
