Small point, but it was the Queen Anne, but in all fairness, he was found to be lame after the race.
You’d have to say George Washington has disappointed. I fully expect him to show his brilliant self in 2 weeks time, but he ran well below form in the Irish 2000 Guineas, and lost the Celebration Mile at the start.
September 12, 2006 at 12:41 #76828Green Green Desert, they thought he was a world beater and he was impressive when he won first time out.
September 12, 2006 at 13:02 #76829Arazi underwent surgery on his front knees before he came back out at 3. Probably shot them to bits in the Juvenile.
September 12, 2006 at 13:17 #76830Can’t agree with Our Vic as one i’m afraid. Slightly dissappointing on occasion and on others not so.
Last years main jumps candidate for me was Ollie Magern. Gives 5lbs to the previous years gold cup and king george runners up. Beats them easily and then not within a distance of winning another race since.
September 12, 2006 at 14:42 #76831Chasers: The real bandit, thought he would win the GC at some point but obviously that won’t be happening
September 12, 2006 at 15:13 #76832
roland,
I love the horse and I know he’s still got plenty of time but Our Vic has surely got to be classed as disappointing so far IMO.
Brilliant on his day but 1 Grade One victory on bottomless ground isn’t great for a horse with his undoubted talent.
September 12, 2006 at 15:56 #76833he is one of my faves also, but alot of his problems have come from his near fatal fall and the form problems pipey had last year.
i prefer to call him frustrating rather than dissapointing. But would be glad join your our vic club?
September 12, 2006 at 16:23 #76834Black Jack Ketchum if he doesn’t take the staying world by storm this coming season. I think (I’m hoping) this horse is awesome.

I remember his debut quite vividly, yquem. I’ve less fond memories of the Futurity a fortnight later when he was backed from 9/4 to 6/4, lost his place due to being quite badly hampered early on and then just failed by half a length to get up despite a very hard ride from Piggott (which may well have left its mark).
Funnily enough, there was another two-year-old that year who looked an absolute world-beater to me. Loyal Toast won first time out at Ascot by six lengths in great style and a very fast time. Next time out he scrambled home by a neck at 2/9 in an ordinary race at Lingfield. Then he ran fourth of six, beaten nearly nine lengths, at Goodwood and then he died.
The other one I remember from that era who fits into this category was Vacarme.
September 12, 2006 at 18:34 #76836I think Three Valleys is overdue a mention….
Yeah. He looked awesome at Royal Ascot. It guts you when you see a potential "wonder horse" turn out to be anything less.
Flat racing could do with a Peagsus the second.
September 12, 2006 at 19:31 #76838I tell you who it’s sad to see bringing up the rear these days…….Jonny Ebeneezer. He’s not the force he was.
And the horse with the most annoying name in the country: Your a Gassman

September 12, 2006 at 20:16 #76839Did Shibboleth run after his maiden before unfortunately dying young?
September 12, 2006 at 20:36 #76840Surely Hawk Wing’s dismal performance in the Queen Anne after his Lockinge romp must rank up there?
Not for me. I always had Hawk Wing down as over-rated.
v
September 12, 2006 at 21:13 #76842The horses I thought would go on to great things are:
Bob Bob Bobbin (wonderful name, thought he’d do much better) Lord Sam (love to see him prove me wrong) Steppes of Gold (Nicky Richards shrewd move selling him) & Kadount, very disappointing last season, moved to Lenny Lungo now so maybe new lease of life and all that

I actually think Hawk Wing was one of the best horses I have ever seen but was far too fragile.
