The pint Ian is making is that the same set up with lydia, willoghby and Robert cooper perhaps, would still be entertaining but not in end of pier 70s style
They would also bring the best out of mcGrath an perhaps francome
And I would love to see Mac trying to refer to lydia as THE FEMALE:o
September 5, 2004 at 11:08 #93860Dear Ian,
I wouldn’t argue with your line up, who could ? However, C4 would have other ideas I think, being noted for its love of trivia, and general dumbing down, and at that unearthly hour on a Saturday morning, I for one, wouldn’t want much else.
The future of t.v. racing is more with satellite isn’t it? where your preferences are more than catered for, and perhaps that’s where it really belongs nowadays, being such a minority interest.
As for big Mac’s chauvinism, surely few people take any of this seriously today. To me it just seems quaintly archaic, and I’m not remotely interested in his political leanings or how much he gets paid.
It is up to those he is working with to put him in his place.
He’s great in the betting ring when allowed to do his stuff, and there have been some real comic moments down the years. ÂÂÂ
Anyone know what’s happened to John Hunt ? he seems to have disappeared from our screens. I would certainly have added his name to your list.
All the best xx
John Hunt is now chief race caller for BBC Radio, and a mighty fine job he does too. I think there is something in the contract which stops him calling on course or working for ATR, RUK C4 etc. Shame that because IMO he is worthy of listening to which can’t be said for some of the screamers or egocentric bulls**tters so in evidence nowadays.

September 5, 2004 at 12:30 #93862BEAR – thanks for that. BBC radio isn’t something I listen to often. I have to say I always preferred his presenting skills to his commentaries though. Still, I shall have to listen in.

Hunty shouting them home at York today – bit spooky that!
September 5, 2004 at 16:00 #93864They must have heard us Bear ! pity he didn’t do the Atr commentary on the big race at Baden-Baden today. It was an insult. They want to get a grip!!
cheers cuddly [or is it grizzly?]

We already know from ATR1 that he refers to Ms Hislop on air as Lucious Lydia. Sadly she didn’t give him a good slap.
Somebody will one day. I live in hope.

Cuddly or grizzly?
Depends whether anyone has eaten my porridge or slept in my bed! ;)
September 5, 2004 at 20:01 #93867How can anyone disagree with betting exchanges?
It’s like saying I disagree with phones or television, what could the grounds be?
Especially now there are choices between exchanges.
September 5, 2004 at 20:18 #93868Dave the question asked is Approve/disapprove exactly as asked on the morning line yesterday. Which is different to disagree.
September 5, 2004 at 21:16 #93869Rightyo … sorry ..
all of what I said before, except disapprove instead of disagree .. happy?
Shouldn’t the poll on the morning line been more along the lines of ‘do you know what a betting exchange is?’
September 5, 2004 at 21:25 #93870The morning line poll was a farce and should not be used in an argument to ban the exchanges.
All the publicity about race fixing was fresh in people’s minds and is naively portrayed by joe public to mean ‘betting exchanges are bent’. I am talking about the average man in the street who knows very little about the gambling world.
THE BOOKMAKERS ARE RUNNING SCARED
They are losing customers every day as more and more shrewd gamblers are deserting them for value prices.
The betting exchanges are the best thing that has happened for punters since betting tax was abolished.
Also the internet is not in every household by any means yet but in a few years time this morning line poll result will be laughed at as outdated.
The advantages of the exchanges far outweigh the disadvantages and the bookies know it.
September 5, 2004 at 21:57 #93871Dave there is a difference, according to the dictionary.
Best mate
I agree with you sentiment generally.
But I would imagine most of the shrewd punters are already there. Wether or not the internet is in all houses make no difference as the majority of punters have jobs and cannot wager during the day.
The danger IMO in all of this is as mentioned the exchanges being "gelded" ie only licensed people being allowed to lay.
At the moment the exchanges are recieving bad publicity for the actual act of the fiddled lay and the availabilty for it to be done.
the poll run by c4 was crass as the majority of C4’s audience are c1 and c2 people least likey to have the internet, credit facilities and understanding of forming a book etc. Some are hostile because they do not simply understand exchanges.
But the news of the world used the poll today as an example against exchanges, as others will do.
bigtony it also is not right to take any money at any price if your a bookmaker with a permit as happened before, if you knew a horse was going to lose. good luck with those demons:)
November 12, 2004 at 22:29 #93872Any clones out there forgot to vote ?
Exchanges should carry a wealth warning on the packet
He left his guests and slipped into a back room of the house to lose a cool ten grand in as many minutes. He was soon back…

November 14, 2004 at 08:37 #93873Four or five lost sheep have squeezed late wool into the muck chamber to register their vote. A small 1% swing is noted towards Dennis Napoleon and away from Snowball Davies.
The dogs are smiling and it just goes to show the power of advertising..
He talked about politics, the new Bridget Jones, cubism, pension policies, a fascinating sea bass recipe all in a hardly detectable higher voice – then he just couldn’t anymore…as someone mentioned the game.
